This chain of upscale diners seems to have discovered the formula for success: big helpings of American comfort food at reasonable prices in bright and friendly surroundings. Families flock to EJ's, and a small sign in the entryway asking parents to fold strollers make it clear just how much of a presence kids are. The interior is like a Rockwell painting, with classic blue-and-white diner decor and an old-fashioned lunch counter. The highlight here, believe it or not, is the cereal: huge, crunchy portions of oatmeal and granola with a generous sprinkling of fresh fruit and berries. The…

prety good!

by nylovesit

this is a good place to go if you want to sit down for a home-cooked meal. Classic breakfast and comfort foods. Portions are good and not overpriced.

Don't expect a 5 star resturant, but for what it is, its prety good.

Important to know- they only take cash.

  • Pros: challah bread and milk shakes!
  • Cons: a little messy

Such bad service you just have to laugh - true story inside

by Serenades60

Wow, where to start. What you're about to read is a true story that happened tonight, July 7th. At a poker game, a few of us decided to order from EJ's. We order a grilled cheese, 2 orders of fries and 2 Pepsi's. After repeating our address 4 times and our phone # three times, we finally got everything straight. When the order arrived, it was 2 orders of fries and two DIET Pepsis, NO grilled cheese! I immediately called back, and it took 4 more times to get the address straight (I am American-born, speak perfect English) and actually the manager had to get on the phone. I told both the order-taker and the manager that we didn't get the grilled cheese and that we had wanted two Pepsis, NOT diet Pepsis. 15 minutes later the delivery guy comes back with TWO grilled cheeses and two more DIET pepsis!!! When we saw that, all of us just started laughing. We could not believe they had completely gotten the same order wrong twice. Not only that, when the delivery guy arrived he HANDED ME A BILL for the missing items from earlier! Please note that we had PAID the first bill. We didn't notice what was missing until 2 minutes after the first delivery guy left. Naturally I told the 2nd delivery guy that we already paid and weren't going to pay a 2nd time for the same food. The 2nd delivery guy gets back to EJs and the manager calls our phone # threatening to call the police if we didn't pay the bill!

This is a true story. We all sat at the poker table reminiscing about the "Chinese Restaurant" Seinfeld episode and how this was even worse. We will NEVER EVER order from EJ's diner again as it has the biggest morons in the world taking orders. Remember that the MANAGER couldn't even get it straight and then called to threaten us for not paying a bill we'd already paid!

  • Pros: They didn't murder me
  • Cons: The entire experience

Mediocre food and jerky owner

by chadwycked

My wife and I took a chance on this restaurant this morning. We definitely wouldn't return. The owner, who was acting as the host, basically pointed at our seats and barked at us to sit there. I ordered Huevos Rancheros that didn't look anything at all like what you would expect. It was basically a lettuce salad with some canned beans and salsa. My wife ordered the sweet potato and turkey hash. The sauce was overpoweringly bad and it came with nothing else. The menu looks like one of Gordon Ramsey's nightmares. The chef must be one of those "jack of all trades, master of none," because everything you could imagine was on the menu. Everything was a la carte. The coffee was okay for diner coffee. The waitress was really nice, but when she asked how everything was, we had to be honest. They also only take cash and the ATM wasn't working, go figure. $28 for two dishes and coffee, no sides. The place was full, so they must have a captive audience of locals who have no other options or don't want to wait in line somewhere else. The fact that people have raved about this place makes me doubt the taste of upper-west siders.

  • Pros: nice waitress
  • Cons: jerky owner, bland food, a la carte menu. higher prices for diner food.
