I've been in NYC for work for about 5 months. I haven't had a lot of time to visit yarn stores. I wandered into Yarn Co a month or so ago & was taken aback. The greeting was warm, inclusive, from the staff. The selection of both colors & fibers was extensive. They offered to help me work out a pattern for a yarn I fell in love with, which was on sale (hooray!). This store is relatively large & airy (for NYC) with lots of light. There is usually a congregation of knitters around the table chatting, knitting, helping each other. I found it welcoming, well supplied. This is definitely at the top of my list for NYC because it combines a great selection with a welcoming environment that encourages creativity & exploration. If you are too shy to speak up & ask for help you might find the environment a bit intimidating. For the shy ones, gather your courage & catch the eye of one of the staff. You will quickly find these are friends you hadn't realized you had. There isn't a huge selection of inexpensive yarns here. This means keeping stash expansion urges under control so you don't use your rent money. I happily commute up to the store as much as my schedule allows. Great energy !
Pros: Friendly, cheerful, knowledgeable staff, large selection of colors & fibers. Great environment.
Cons: VERY steep steps, be careful to keep your balance! Not a lot of inexpensive fiber choices

The Yarn Company is by far the best yarn store I have ever been to. There is a reason why the store is always so crowded. "Getting help" at The Yarn Company is totally different than any other knitting store I have been to. When I am at other stores, Ill say "I want to make a baby sweater" and they will often direct me to a bookshelf of knitting books and I am told to find a pattern I like and I am left to sift through 100s of books. I usually walk out at that point because it is too overwhelming. At Yarn Co, when I ask this same question, someone walks me through the store and shows me all the beautiful samples and options I have. When I see something I like (and usually its very hard to pick just one), they then help me pick out a nice yarn to use, and then write out a pattern for me. All of this takes time, but its well worth it. Their yarn selection is beautiful and they have tons of great projects that are very easy to knit. I highly recommend Yarn Co to all knittiers, beginners and experts - its really in a class of its own.
Pros: amazing selection, great ideas, customized patterns
Cons: small space (but that's NYC)
