I recently chopped off about 6 inches of hair as a sign of new beginnings. In reality I was attempting to emotionally disconnect from the old dead self and birth a new, healthy version of myself. For some, cutting off 6 inches may be a bit dramatic, but 3 months in and i'm still loving my new look! However, my hair grows fast and I needed to have a trim. Ahh the crossroad! Should I return to Super Cuts ((don't judge me!)) or should I try a salon I could tell my friends about? Salon West was suggested to me and I decided to give it a go. Enough about me! Salon West is cozily located on 85th street, right off of Amsterdam avenue. As soon as I walked in I was warmly greeted by most of the staff and was directed to hang up my coat and get comfortable. I was offered coffee and water, I'll comment on the coffee in a moment. I took my seat and was asked a series of questions regarding my hair, my level of upkeep and most importantly, did I care for bangs. I recieved a dry cut from Jennifer, who is very skilled with scissors. After my cut Amberlynn took me over to wash my hair. The hair washing was so relaxing, normally I become very tense because I had a horrible experience a few years back and i've carried the fear of getting up from the chair soaking wet. However, she offered up a head massage that almost made me forget where I was. Amberlynn also blew out my hair, and when it was all done I didn't recognize my hair! It was as if they had replaced it with someone else's healthy, shiny hair. A few bonus's i'd like to mention are, Amberlynn offered me coffee when I walked in but I answered her by saying i'd like some after my hair is done. Right before she started blowing out my hair she asked me how i'd like my coffee. I was surprised she remembered what i had said, it's those little things that go a long way. She truly was listening and paying attention to me. She also gave me tips on how to style my hair. There was a very quaint, relaxed vibe with the sounds of Thievery Corporation playing in the background. Wish I could divvy up some dirt but the salon didn't offer any!

Looks like it's time to update Salon West. It's as good as

it ever was, courteous, friendly service, highly competent

stylists, and colorists, minimal waiting times, and, as others have said, a serious professional commitment on the part of all the staff to make each client feel and look as beautiful as she possibly can.

I keep seeing 'Manhattan's Hidden Gem' or something along those lines in the reviews. I would 100% agree! I've never been more in-love with my color!

This salon is truly about catering to their clients. I had everybody bending to my every will just to make sure I'm satisfied with my environment. like that. Makes me feel like a princess. Who doesn't love VIP treatment?

Rude & Stingy Owner!. I've been going to Salon West for the past 7 years because of my hairstylist Tina, who is absolutely amazing! Even though I moved to the lower East side, I still continue going there because no one can do my highlights as well as Tina!

Unfortunately, the owner is extremely unprofessional and lacks any knowledge of customer service. Aside from being rude, she is petty and mistreats both her clients and her staff.

Today I had to return to the salon for a correction, as I wanted lighter highlights. To my amazement, the owner charged me $20! I was extremely shocked and felt like I was taken advantage of. I've never paid for a correction, especially not after having already paid $160 for a full head of highlights the previous week.

When I asked the owner why I was being charged an additional fee, she said she has to pay for water, electricity, staff and products!

She was acting as if a couple of highlights cost her a fortune, when it actually cost ME $40 to just travel there and back from where I live.

Unless you're willing to put up with bad customer service and some serious stinginess when it comes to fees, my advice would be to go elsewhere (unless you must see Tina or her little sister, who are both great!)

Loved it!. The staff was so sweet, welcoming, and listened! If you don't like something going on with your hair say it and they'll fix it. My number one thing is not to go into salons and feel pushed around by stylists who tell me I need keratin or a perm. They listen and aren't pushy. Two thumbs up. Also, nice environment and I saw them work with a little girl-they were very sweet to her as well--definitely not what I experienced growing up, I think I always left the salon crying but now I am a happy customer :)

Amazing hair salon!!. Salon West is the best salon in NYC. They are very nice and know what they are doing. Also, they make you feel comfortable right when you walk through the door.

Jennifer has been cutting my hear for over 20 years. Consistent, professional, and always ready to fit me around her busy schedule and mine. And the staff has always been pleasant and courteous.

Always happy with the results!. I am a native of the Upper West Side and have tried many hairdressers in the area over the years. I have now been client of Salon West and of my hairdresser Sally for over 5 years. She is very talented and very dedicated to her craft. She has always done an amazing job for me!

The staff is wonderful, warm and friendly and do a great job.

I highly recommend Salon West to anyone!
