“The salon is very comfortable and there is zero attitude”
“This location, at Columbus and 84th, has professional staff and a serene atmosphere.”
“Reasonable price, serene atmosphere.”
Avoid at all cost! This place is a total joke. I posted this same rating on yelp in the hopes that it saves you from ever going to this Jeffrey Stein location! I got a horrific haircut from Jacob this week. My hair was left lifeless, limp, and stringy due to his lack of skill. On top of it all, what kind of professional salon doesn't have a diffuser that fits any of their hairdryers?? The brilliant Jacob and the stylist to his left (who gave an older woman with short, grey hair another HORRIBLE haircut and kept bickering with the customer when she asked for her bangs to be shorter) rigged up some solution with a rubber band in order to keep the diffuser attached to the hairdryer it wasn't meant for. While holding the diffuser/dryer above my head, the diffuser fell off and actually hit my head! You would think a profuse apology would have been in order - not even a simple sorry! The manager Arthur was not around when I went to check out (at which point I was kind enough to leave a nice tip, stupid me!). I left a message the following day for him to call me back, but of course he didn't return my call. I called again today and happened to catch the manager in this time. I told him exactly what happened and that I wanted my money back so I could get my hair fixed somewhere else. He said he didn't believe me that they didn't have a functioning diffuser in the store and also that he didn't believe I was hit on the head with one! Are you seriously going to call me a lair??? He didn't offer to fix my horrible haircut. He refused to refund my money. He rudely asked if I always cry after I get my hair cut, in response to my telling him that I cried for hours after leaving the salon. HOW RUDE! He said that if I had been a regular customer, instead of this being my first time, he'd have thought about refunding my money. He also mentioned that the $65 they charged me was a discounted rate, but failed to mention why I received the discount in the first place, which I thought was super weird. If the salon is bleeding that badly for the $65 dollars in refusing to refund my money so I could get my hair fixed elsewhere, that says something right there. This place is a sad, sad salon with terrible management and terrible stylists. Do yourself and your hair a favor and go anywhere else!
Dishonest salon - beware.
This place has terrible customer service and should be avoided. If you call and make an appointment, they will have availability. As soon as you mention that you have a coupon, they suddenly don't have availability at that time and say they will call you back. What an awful way to treat a potential future customer!
This is not a way to run a reputable business. Either put restrictions on the coupon regarding which hours you accept the coupon, or don't run it at all. Don't outright lie to your customers.
Even if you don't have a coupon, I'd be very wary of doing business with an establishment that has such shady business practices. God knows what they'll do to your hair! Avoid them.
Love this Salon. I have been going to Arthur and Michelle for 8 years now. I have never found anyone who is able to color and cut my hair as well as they do. They always do an amazing job and I walk out feeling like a super model.
All the talent without the snobbery.
After literally going to three different salons in one day, trying to fix horrible hair coloring gaffes, I stumbled upon Jeffery Stein Salon, where Sergio worked his magic on my hair. For about three years now I've been going to Sergio for my highlights and my single process hair coloring. N0 one has ever suspected that I get my hair colored, he makes it look incredibly natural.
The one time that I was unhappy with the turn out of my coloring, I returned the next day, and he squeezed my into his schedule, and fixed the coloring for free.
The overall ambiance of the salon if calm, and all the stylist are kind and unpretentious, but filled with talent and experience. As i left the salon after a coloring and a haircut, many of the stylists complimented me on my new hair, which left me filled with confidence. I highly recommend this place.

Just what I was looking for and more.... Upon moving to NYC, I didn't know where to go for a reasonably priced but stylish haircut. I happened by Jeffrey Stein Salon on my way home from work one night and I don't plan to ever go anywhere else! Celine is a fabulous listener who spent a good deal of time talking with me about what I wanted and did exactly that. I felt that she really cared about making sure I was happy and I left with an awesome cut that was current and manageable. Great atmosphere, never snobby and always fantastic!
Cool salon, no snobbery. This is one of those rare salons that is top-notch, but doesn't have major attitude. In particular, Sergio is a great colorist...
User-friendly hair services at super friendly prices..
In Short
These simple, Formica-and-tile salons provide hairstyles that won't cause major financial setbacks. Stylists specialize in different hair types and looks to accommodate the wide range of clients--from students and locals to he corporate crew, depending on the neighborhood. Schedule an appointment or walk-in for color, cuts, conditioning treatments and blowouts. Prices vary between stylists, and name-brand products are available for the take-home, as are brushes, flatirons and other haircare tools.
Reasonable price, serene atmosphere.. This location, at Columbus and 84th, has professional staff and a serene atmosphere. I've never had a bad cut there. The prices of the stylists range from reasonable to expensive, but even the stylists on the low end are good.
THE BEST OF THE WEST. These people are the best on the Upper Westside -- i used to pay nearly $200 on Madison Avenue but i've tried a few people for cuts and they are all amazing. I also got my hair highlighted and it was incredible. The salon is very comfortable and there is zero attitude
