Editorial Review for Equinox Fitness Clubs – by Drew Pisarra

The Scene
With its ultra-clean, minimalist décor and its topnotch staff, Equinox raises the bar for chain health clubs. At consistently spacious facilities, the design team continually maximizes natural light and highlights organic architectural quirks. Equipment from industry standards like Cybex and Hammerstrength are paired with high-end machinery--including one specifically designed for the company by Life Fitness. Even the piped-in music (which varies from room to room) has been thoughtfully programmed. Locker rooms are uniformly spotless.

The Workout
The in-house personal-training program--which approaches strength, balance and coordination in a cyclical pattern--is so highly regarded that some independent gyms recognize it in lieu of more established national certifications. Indeed, instructors in the top tier must have academic articles published in their area of expertise. Classes are offered round the clock and range from Spinning and yoga to more unique hybrids incorporating boxing and ballet. Many studios boast sprung floors.

The Saturday morning and evening classes are so packed that it's impossible to get a good workout. It's an accomplishment just to avoid getting injured. The Body Sculpt classes at popular times are becoming dance-y 80's style aerobic classes with difficult to follow routines because they're too crowded to allow room for weights or body bars. These classes are not worth the steep membership fees. And if you have to hire a personal trainer to get a good workout, why pay so much for the overhead of classes? Although I joined when the 92nd & Broadway club opened, I'm not renewing -- it's just NOT WORTH THE MONEY anymore.

Cons: , Very expensive

On the surface, this Equinox seems well run and luxurious. Trust me, IT'S NOT. Don't be fooled by the obvious -- you can get unlimited clean towels and a treadmill at any gym. Try one of the five others in the neighborhood. You'll get the same experience at a fraction of the price. If you like taking classes and you have a day job, this is not the gym for you. The few decent classes offered in the evening are packed so you barely have room to move and the studios get disgustingly hot and humid. The instructors aren't very creative or motivating. Crunch is way better. The rest of the staff isn't any better. If you do join, beware the cancellation policy. They automatically re-enroll you each year so you have to give them 45 days notice in person before your year is up or you're out another $200.

Cons: , Bad Classes, Bad Value
