No gimmicks. Just a great place to drink.. Because it's kind of off the beaten path, this bar has maintained its rep as a solid local bar and is always my first choice for a beer or cocktail. Don't be fooled by the name -- this is NOT a frat bar or a hipster bar. The patrons are distinctively local, including some old swillers, a few CU students and the occasional softball team.

The bartenders include two local ladies who *really* know how to keep your glass full and don't shy away from mixing a good cocktail. You get the feeling they've been doing this for a long time and care about keeping their patrons happy.

There's no food served, but you can bring in pizza or falafel from the nearby joints. They also serve free popcorn if you ask.

Warm ... and Cool. A surprising place where you can meet and talk to interesting strangers - of every age, any ethnicity and either gender. Somehow the patrons all seem to be above average in intelligence - and the one's who aren't are as sweet as they come. How's that possible? You can order food to be delivered from any of 50 nearby restaurants, they offer free Wi-Fi, and you can even bring your dog in . Unless you're looking for something very specific, it's really hard to fault the place. How often can you walk into a bar and in 15 minutes feel like you're one of the regulars? It's like an old, comfortable sweater - you can spend the whole day in it.

Cheap beer and pool with a basement feel.. The Scene
You'd think that Tap a Keg would be brimming with the football frat boys from nearby Columbia University, given the bar's let's-party moniker. But strangely, there's little evidence that the place has ever played host to a single undergrad, let alone a regular crowd of them.

The Draw

The folks here are somewhat scruffy types that you'd find in a midtown sports bar. No matter what time of day you venture in, you're likely to find an older patron passed out in his beer and a younger one trying to convince the take-no-bull bartender that his ID is legit. There's a pool table, which goes along nicely with the room's basement look, but really no effort is made to create an inviting space.

what bars should be. I used to argue like crazy with my friends about what a bar should be. They wanted a bar with lots of hot girls in skimpy clothes. I knew better. Those bars are expensive, and the girls are annoying to talk to. But Tap a Keg gets it right. Anytime you go in there, there's older gentlemen. And they're interesting folks with interesting stories to tell. Play some pick-up pool, learn about the publishing industry or racial politics in the '60s, all while you enjoy a nice cool beer.

my local in NYC. I get to NYC once a year. Wherever I go, I try to find a local to hang in. For me, in NYC, it's TaK. Nice people, decent prices, good beer selection, etc. Tonight there were folks speaking german, spanish and scots-english...a friggin United Nations. Oh yeah...the bar tender is a hottie.
