This store closed. This WAS a great store - great staff and book selection. Too bad it closed 4 months ago. I'm sure it will be turned into a bank, just like every other store on the upper west side.
Evidence points to this being an excellent place to get your new, used and rare whodunnit books..
The Scene
Only a place as venerable as Murder Ink could get away with a window display of hanging food cans as a way to illustrate that it's a "suspense" bookshop. Opened in 1972, the extremely tidy one-room shop is the world's first store to specialize in mystery novels, and the scattering of memorabilia on the wall--including a vintage Clue game and a 1972 letter from Ellery Queen--manages to imbue it with an appropriately quaint ambience. The staff carries a cool, confident knowledge of mystery lit, evident from their courteously thorough yet succinct answers to questions.
The Goods
"Mystery A-Z" in the back is home to new and used books, from classic to contemporary. You'll also find sections like "New and Noteworthy," "British Imports" and "Out of Print," as well as "Collectible Paperbacks" and "Autographed" inside glass cases and safe from the dreaded fingerprints.
