I live in the area and as I passed the bakery always loved the wonderful smells that floated in the air. Finally tried it and ordered a birthday cake for my daughter. When I walked in, we stood and waited patiently while the person ahead was assisted and when it was our turn, immediately, I was made to feel as if I should be honored to be in THEIR presence! It was as if they were doing ME a favor by allowing ME to pay THEM to make a cake for me! Anyway, we ordered our cake and picked it up at the designated time. The cake smelled glorious (Buttery delicious) and it took all I had not to forget the party and just eat it in the street! Then we arrived home, cut into it and found what appeared to be a wonderfully frosted--old and dry pound cake! My kids ate the frosting and we tossed out the cake!
My second visit, I'm passing by with one of the kids, who had done something that I felt deserved a treat. I (warily), walked into the bakery and decided to order two cupcakes (Vanilla and chocolate). Again, the attitude was in the air but we ordered our cupcakes. They were awful! The Vanilla tasted a little better than shortening and sugar and the chocolate tasted as if dirt had been mixed into the frosting!
NEVER AGAIN and my son, each time we pass by says "Please oh please DON'T bake my cake!" It smells great but the flavor and service is horrendous!
Crazy Carrot Cake!!!!. You must try the carrot cake!!! it is CRAZY GOOD. I think they borrowed my grandmother's recipe. Just kidding. It is moist (and remained moist for days). The cakes are tall and very satisfying. I live in Brooklyn but travel to Harlem for their carrot cake anytime I have a special occassion. I always get buttercream frosting just b/c I can't have cream cheese but I am sure it is just as good. Enjoy.
For upscale prices,i need upscale service. I remember when Aliyah use to bake cakes in her home. The quality is not that good anymore,on a busy day they will not hesitate to slip u an old cake!!! The young ladies she have working the counter are beyond rude!!!!!!! Her son has better customer service skills then anybody i've ever seen work there. They are so low class, for that point alone u wouldn't want to spend ur money. Aliyah is a nice person but she has lost her creativity. Anything that i have asked for she cannot do,but she doesn't hesitate to raise her prices. She has lost touch with those who got her started,"HER COMMUNITY!! " Her lack of getting in the new, along with her staff have and will continue to make her lose customers.Try TJ Bakery on 147th and 7th in Harlem
Rude trumps taste. RUDE This was the worst. I came to buy a cupcake and to order a few dozen from my two year old's upcoming party. I waited patiently and noticed bubbly young ladies ready to order. One asked (politely) if baking is done on premises. She received the rolled eyes and the 10 second delay "yeah". I let that pass because I was not sure..."maybe they teens were rude previously" ????? I wanted so much to order these cupcakes (you've been there before I'm sure). I waited till there was no crowd and asked about ordering a few dozen cupcakes. Silly me.. I thought I would get a price list. Instead the reply was "it depends on the flavor you get" Ok I said and waited to hear the prices.--- So I asked a follow-up question. Can you please tell me the prices so that I can figure how I would like to order a variety of muffins? (Now I feel I have to justify my inquiry) I am having a birthday party for my son and I would like to know more pricing info so I can organize my order. Response: "Well when you ready give us a call?????? I smiled and said I am ready now. Response: "Go over there (she pointed behind her to an oppossing counter). I was left standing a few minutes (by the way my son was with me). She approaches with an order slip and I say "this will be a variety of cupcakes" She now cuts me off and rolls her eyes leaving them closed and said "What date". I can't go any further............I stare for a second to make sure that this is a full-grown women and not perhaps a really large teenager. NO... I'm right, she is a full-grown women. I gently said "thank you" and took my son out of the store. I am so sorry about this experience. I own my own business (seasonal) and I work as a professional. I just like success and it doesn't have to be mine. I am dissappointed..BUT more importantly I am so fustrated by the lack of value put on the dollar of customers who may not fit the profile-whatever it may be.... IT IS WRONG (Taste good is not enough.)
The Place In Harlem for Cakes and Such.
For my fiftieth birthday, my honey ordered (at short notice) and received a FABULOUS double-chocolate cake from the uptown store. Now, as I have heard complaints about the 116th St. store, here's the deal.
Fabulous tasting cakes and cupcakes (the best) aside, if you want to ORDER, for a major event??do it uptown. They're the wholesaler's, and this is what they do. It's best to come in person, especially if the name on the cake (like mine was), or your instructions are complicated; no matter what bakery you go to, a lot can go wrong by phone. If you can't come in person, then BE VERY CLEAR over the phone, and get them to read your instructions back. Trust me, you won't go wrong.
Now, if you want somewhere cute to sit, or you want to pick up something sweet on the way home, then the 116th store is fine. There is one young lady who's a little slow, so be patient. And remember, if you're demanding, they're rude. Harlem doesn't do demanding or fast. Be patient, they see you. If you're in a hurry, forget it.
I've been supporting them for years, and have never had a bad experience. And it's not because I was a Harlemite, or black. I'm originally from??and again living in??the Boogie (the Bronx).
Horrible Customer Service @ 116th Avenue location. I pre-ordered a specialty cake for my grandmothers 95th birthday party! TWO WEEKS in advance! They were supposed to make me 1 large cake with a small 9 and 5 on top of the larger sheet cake (they even have pictures of what it is supposed to look like, pictures of what is supposed to be their very own work!). I expressed to the young lady NINA whom took my order that the cake needed to be ready at 10 am for pick up because the event was taking place in Queens at 12pm! I even showed her a picture out of THEIR very own book of pictures. In any event I arrive and the entire order has been botched and instead of picking up 1 Large cake I am picking up 1 large sheet cake and 2 small number cakes that are not only different in color but the wrong color ENTIRELY!!! I asked for pink and white with a hint of lavender, but what I got was purple and white with a hint of pink!!! Oh and did I mention while I did arrive at 10am the cakes weren't ready until 11AM!!!!! Needless to say I and the cakes all 3 of them arrived late to the party. And to compensate me for their mess up they knocked off the $70 balance and attempted to force another cake on me! I didn't even want the 3 cakes they already forced on me much less a 4th cake!!!! Terrible customer service, and attention to detail. But in the end I saved $70 and the cakes were delicious. Next time I'm spending the extra money and taking my business to Cake Man Raven! Brooklyn's Best!
Taste so nice you'll buy it twice. Make My Cake the name speaks for itself.... I had the opportunity to meet this young lady and I did say young lady who is the mistress behind the madness... I would like to take my hat off to you and your staff I was dying to try a piece of cakes at Circle of Sisters and there were no more Red Velvet slices the young lady very well spoken said"more is on the way" I anticipated the wait and came back and to my surprise words could not express this tasty delight> I liked her Red Velvet so much I bought one to take home and tried the German Chocolate and the Chocolate DANG moist I didn't even need a glass of cold milk.... I tried Cakeman Raven and his Red Velvet is out of this world but there was something in her cakes that gives it a fresh right out the over flavor. Sista I take my hat off to you. I will definitely support a young African American sister and put the word out to hurry on down to Harlem and get a taste of the good life. Cake so nice you'll buy it twice.
BEST CAKE EVER!!!!.
Excellent cake. Very moist and delicious. My family loves it and you will too!! . Sometimes the workers have an attitude when i go there but better believe their frowns are turned to smiles because that's just my personality. I wouldnt give them or anybody the satisfation of letting them ruin my day and the crave for the cake. Remember IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CAKE!!
Now i dont even wait for an occassion I just go order a cake to go with Sunday dinner!!!
Give it a try . Guarantee you will recommend it to a friend !!
The Best Red Velvet Cake!!!. My man got me one for my birthday and it is by far, hands down, the best red velvet cake I have ever tasted! It's so incredibly moist, rich and dense; it is unbelievable. I think it was a 12 inch cake, but it felt like it weighed 20lbs! That may give you some idea of how moist it is. Delicious!
AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!.
I live in the neighborhood so it easy to go to. This is the SECOND time ive bought something from there and have gotten SICK.
The first time was a couple months ago, I've always heard they were good, so i decided to give them a try. im so sad i did...i got a strawberry shortcake and the whipped cream was SPOILED. It gave me a burning sensation the moment i put it in my mouth.
Today i had a sugar craving so i decided maybe i would give it another chance. I'm a very forgiving person...i know it could have been a bad day last time, maybe they over looked one and gave it to me etc. but NOPE...half way down into the strawberry shortcake i noticed the strawberries at the bottom were half gray!!!! My stomach is doing flips people!!! DO NOT GO THERE! I'm all for supporting uptown shops, i was born in the heights, and ive lived in harlem for the past 5 years...but this is just not a place worth going. i thought since seeing celebrity clients on there website they were highclass and professional, but its not the case. They must guarantee freshness to their celebrity clients, but not the people in their own community. If you want a GOOD strawberry shortcake i suggest making the trip down to Veniero's Down on 11th street and 1st ave. It's a TROOP, but ive never had a bad cake from there.
