The Scene – Paola's is a trattoria in the classic sense: a family-operated spot that has a rustic feel and is intimately linked to its surroundings. This is the sort of place where regulars invent frequent reasons to come, though it's so casual no special occasion is required. On the first visit, service--invariably attentive--runs the gamut from hospitable to gregarious. – – The Food – Sublime pastas, robust meats slow-braised to fall-apart tenderness, fresh-dredged seafood. Mozzarella is made to order, served as a warm, still-settling mound resembling soft dough…

Excellent food

Paola's was a very welcome surprise. We usually go downtown for dinner but we wanted something close on the UES and booked last minute. The decor is a little tacky (fake luxury in earthy tones), the service a little gruff (east europeans pretending to be italians) and the clientele eclectic with a mix of older UES folks and rowdy B&T people but the food was superb. The menu is fairly traditional Italian but the execution was very strong, The pasta is freshly made with the sauces not too overbearing. We had an excellent plate of truffle ravioli and a hearty amatriciana. The appetizers are diverse and well made: the home made mozarella was to die for and the salads were good. The main courses were very good as well. A veal milanese was perfectly executed with the batter being done just right, the scallops were fresh and a veal chop was perfectly cooked and very tender. The desserts were also excellent: a fig ice cream was all about the figs and an apple turnover was good but a little soggy. Highly recommended for the food, if not the ambience.
- Pros: Excellent food, Solid italian wine list
- Cons: Ambience a little tacky
New Location

Paola's has moved to 92nd and Madison. The new space isn't as nice as the old one; it isn't as intimate and it is significantly louder. The food is still good, but the atmosphere has changed a lot. Paola's remains a great neighborhood place but it isn't worth traveling for, especially given that it remains more expensive than most of its direct competitors.
- Pros: Nice Neighborhood spot moved out of the neighborhood
- Cons: Price
