Editorial Review for Brandy's Piano Bar – by Scott Makin
The Scene
This gay-owned-and-operated piano bar has thrived since the early 1980s, thanks to its talented staff and a friendly atmosphere in which regulars mingle effortlessly with first-time visitors. A bar seating 20 runs the length of the room on the left side, while a banquette runs all around the periphery of the room, which is filled out by round tables and chairs accommodating 40. At 9:30pm, a rotating roster of pianists accompanies the singing waitstaff.
The Draw
Brandy's has earned its reputation as a "performance bar"--one that emphasizes professional entertainment over open mikes and sing-alongs. The pianists, bartenders and servers are veterans from Broadway, musical theater and cabaret. Their choice of material is as eclectic and varied as their resumes.

Insider Tips
Early EveningBefore the live pianist arrives at 9:30pm, the bartenders (a fun and personable lot) play CDs from their own collection. From 4pm to 8pm daily, get $1 off drinks.
Star SearchOn Mondays, their weekly night off, Broadway stars have been know to slip in under the radar and belt out a cabaret tune.

I've always enjoyed Brandy's. It is a great place with lots of character; from regulars to people just stopping in. You'll not see a piano bar in Manhattan with such a diverse crowd from night to night. Sometimes the place does get a little crowded but it is only a testament to how great it is. Be sure and NOT get in the way of the young 20-somethings and single middle-aged women when they're drinking alcohol and a Billy Joel song comes on!!!
Pros: Truly a unique bar, lively fun energy, talented and friendly staff
Cons: So popular the place can get crowded - get there early!

I went here on Friday with friends from out of town. I had such a BLAST! The music was great, the pianist and performers that work there are amazing! Then the bartenders started playing percussion, it was so much fun. My friends loved it as well. Great place for live music, good prices on drinks, fun staff of singers, they even bought us shots. I'm just afraid that my friends will go without me!
Pros: Great music, talented fun waitstaff
Cons: sometimes people talk through songs, but it IS a bar.....
