Editorial Review for Comic Strip Live – by Scott Makin
The Scene
Housed in its original location since 1976, Comic Strip Live can boast of being one of the longest-running venues for comedy in the world. A front bar area with stools and booths leads to the showcase room, which seats 200 in the traditional round table/chair layout. The menu (from nearby restaurants) offers Chinese, Italian and Mexican cuisine.
The Draw
This club has cultivated a workshop environment. During the week, up-and-coming comedians develop and perfect new material. Once they've passed the test, they're slotted for the coveted Friday, Saturday and Sunday slots--which also feature headliner comics doing 10- to 15-minute sets. Major stars who began their careers here include Adam Sandler, Jim Breuer, Caroline Rhea and a then-unknown 18-year-old Eddie Murphy. When in town, sometimes big names such as Chris Rock still stop by.

The "New" Comic Strip Live at 158 72nd St. should be SHUT DOWN! WHAT A RIP-OFF! I like a laugh as much as the next gal, but after paying the $10 each for the "discounted" admission, then the "required" $20 drink minimum each (soft drinks are $20 and the UNLIMITED sign isn't true because they NEVER re-fill your glass) the final assault was the "Mandatory" 18% gratuity, when it was just 2 of us, that made this a TRAGEDY instead of a comedy! There was NO air-conditioning, the tables and chairs were all jammed on top of one another and the women's bathroom door didn't close. (I was told by many patrons that if closed, you would be locked in there for God knows how long.) I soon found out first hand when I accidentally let the door just touch the frame and had to muster all my strength, several times, to get back out.) The girl behind me worriedly asked if I would watch the door for her. I said yes and then had to kick the door open so she could get out! Isn't that a fire hazard? I know this is a "New" location for the club, but don't you think that NEW means NEW!! Not bathroom doors that trap your paying customers inside and blue duct tape that holds critical wires together on the ceiling. When we pointed out the problem to the staff they wouldn't even let us use the perfectly functioning single stall men's room. Comic Strip Live Management you should be ashamed of yourselves and we should call Arnold Diaz and John Stossel's Shame On You or better yet, Tappy Phillips from ABC and get 7 on OUR Side!! With ALL the money collected prior to and during the shows, can't you afford to give us the basics? Speaking of basics, how about a REAL microphone for your comedians? It's hard enough to enjoy a show in an over-crowded, over-heated room in late June without struggling to hear over a crackly and distorted microphone. Lastly, please, have the comics out on stage that we were TOLD were going to be there by your staff, instead of the "bait and switch" we did get.

i am a native upper east sider and i had never been to comic strip live, until friday when some of my friends from out of town came to visit and got me a ticket.needless to say i was really looking foward to going and having a laugh and a few beers. i dont what to start bashing the comics cause they weren't that bad nor were they that funny, well actually the last 2 guys were pretty good( an Australian and a guy from Queens) but with that said its the management that really annoyed me off. lets just start by asking yourself how much would you pay for 12 drinks?try 240$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Lets just go through that again 12drinks=$240!!!!are you for real?granted of course the waitress felt free to add on a gratuity of 50 bucks and why not?i saw her twice through out the 90 min show while waiting for every one of my 3 beers(yes i had to order 2 at once cause we were nearing the end of the show and i knew i wouldnt see here again and i was going to get charged anyway, 2 drink min!!!)then at the end of the show they have the audacity to tell the audience to tip your waitress!!! after the show i went i to talk, not complain, to the douchbag manger and all he said was"well you did have a laugh? and by the way i have another show on the way in so..." and with that the bouncers were there to see us out.Well, all i have to say is if you find yourself walking into this shithole please DON'T!!!!!if you what a laugh and not get financially F*^Ked or treated like an idiot go to carolines of the laugh factory!!!you will thank me!!!
