Editorial Review for Herald Square Hotel – by Linda Harel

In Short
Just blocks from Macy's and the Empire State Building, this budget hotel is a convenient place to stay when you'd rather spend your money on shopping and sightseeing. The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable and everyone gets satellite DirecTV and free high-speed Internet access. Various room sizes make it a practical place for both single travelers and families. Pictures adorning the walls come from Life magazine, the building's original owners.

We recently stayed at the Herald Square Hotel and after much researching decided we'd give it a go seeing as the location and price were great. When we arrived we noticed they were doing soem exterior renovations, upon walking inside i see that the lobby isn't very upscale and I become a little concerned. The happways leading to the room reminded me of a dorm hall, but maybe it's because of tiled floors. Overall, the room was very nice, super comfy, flat screen tv and free HBO! The bathroom was also very large and recently renovated with aveda soap included. However when i showered in the morning I had a problem with the water going from warm to ice cold and then having to wait a minute or so to go back to warm. Oh, there was no thermostat in the room and the room was extremely warm, so we had to use the AC in the middle of January. All in all an amazing value and would definitely recommend and stay here again.

Found this hotel on Expedia -- which did not calculate all the various taxes that would be included, so beware of the "$97 a night" ad -- it's closer to about $130 after all taxes have been added. BUT it is STILL the best deal ever! Rooms were clean and remodeled with great beds; rooms were overall very nice, although you could hear everyone and anyone else who was entering or exiting their room. You just can't beat how close you are to everything within walking distance. I literally parked the car (beware of the rip of Park Centre right next door on W. 31st -- more than $100 for two days when the sign misleads you in thinking it's closer to about $30/day) checked in and headed out on the town. The service at the hotel was excellent, with very polite people working the desk. I would definitely stay there again! Caveat: Not the place for a romantic interlude -- for that I recommend Club Quarters in the financial district. Herald Square is simply a crash pad.
