Editorial Review for Equinox Fitness Clubs – by Drew Pisarra
The Scene
With its ultra-clean, minimalist décor and its topnotch staff, Equinox raises the bar for chain health clubs. At consistently spacious facilities, the design team continually maximizes natural light and highlights organic architectural quirks. Equipment from industry standards like Cybex and Hammerstrength are paired with high-end machinery--including one specifically designed for the company by Life Fitness. Even the piped-in music (which varies from room to room) has been thoughtfully programmed. Locker rooms are uniformly spotless.
The Workout
The in-house personal-training program--which approaches strength, balance and coordination in a cyclical pattern--is so highly regarded that some independent gyms recognize it in lieu of more established national certifications. Indeed, instructors in the top tier must have academic articles published in their area of expertise. Classes are offered round the clock and range from Spinning and yoga to more unique hybrids incorporating boxing and ballet. Many studios boast sprung floors.

Going from New York Sports Club to Equinox was like going from hell to heaven. Equinox is always clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. One never needs to wait for a machine nor is one forced to rush. At Equinox there are always plenty of machines that are in good working order. The whole atmosphere is pleasant. Equinox can be more expensive then some other gyms, but, at Equinox you get what you paid for. (See if your employer has a deal with Equinox, it can ssubstantialy reduce your costs.)
Pros: It can be more expensive.
Cons: A great place to relax and work out. You get what you paid for.

I visited Equinox because I was interested in joining, but had such a terrible experience with the membership staff that I walked out and never looked back. Nice gym, prohibitive cost....for a place that costs so much, the fact that they won't even let you try it first without handing them hundreds of dollars on the spot is ridiculous. Unless you have serious money to spend on working out, I'd suggest shopping around for a place without the sleazy marketing staff.
Pros: swanky
Cons: sleazy membership policies are an immediate turn-off.
