The Space
The bright and spacious John's Times Square bares little resemblance to its legendary Greenwich Village forebear. There's a sweeping staircase to the second floor tables, with a giant mural depicting the cityscape across the wall. Happily, the acclaimed brick-oven pizza hasn't changed.
The Pizza
A tomato and cheese pie--alas, slices aren't available--will run you $12, and each topping will add another couple of bucks to your tab, but it's more than worth it. Fresh garlic, sausage and pepperoni are all wonderful toppings, but don't pile too many on: This is New York-style pizza we're talking about, not Chicago, and it has the thin, charred crust that's a Gotham trademark.

Visited John's many times on visits to NY and the pizza is still excellent. This trip, we visited twice and both times the service at the table was not as we remembered but would still go back again. The bar staff are great and keep up with the pressure with a smile when busy.

I was going to a Saturday night movie in Times Square and my friend recommended going to Johns. I knew of the place in the village and was pleasantly surprised when we came in because the place is huge. We didn't really have time to get dinner (I was late) so we decided to have a drink and a snack at the bar. The bartender was so nice and helpful (and he looked like a husky Tom Ford!). He recommended a few things that were quick and we ended up getting an order of bruschetta. It was one of those nights where everything was perfect. Great, quick food, friendly service (and cute!). We will definitely be back.

Very poor service - inexcusable! The restaurant was not very busy, but it took a good 15 minutes after we were seated to find anyone to take our order. Our order did come promptly - the salad over-dressed, would definitely NOT recommend the calamari (chewy, lukewarm, poor quality and not-so-tasty sauce) and a large (chewy crust) pizza. After that, no one came by our table to check to see if we wanted another drink or ask how we were doing. We had to signal for someone to come pack up our remaining chewy pizza and bring us a bill. I will not return - there are plenty of other places to dine when I'm in the city!
