“We love this place for all kinds of meat and for anything packaged.”
“Upon entering, a would be customer is engaged by lovely smiles and friendly conversations with Big Apple's knowledgeable and courteous staff.”
BEST BARGAIN IN NEW YORK FOR MEAT, PERIOD.. This place is very cool... literally! It's attached grocery store (also a boon for bargain shoppers) is at normal temperature, but the entire fresh meat area is actually a giant, walk-in refrigerator!! They have just about everything you could think of-- from poultry to pork to beef, but in generous quantities--thus the incredible prices. While it's true that they don't cater to high end prime meat connoisseurs, the bargain prices are well worth the trip to this Hells Kitchen neighborhood shop. I always purchase my meat here, especially when entertaining large groups of people. But even if it's just for me, I simply freeze the rest for later. The staff is extremely nice and helpful too, always a bonus:)
Big Apple is oustanding. Absolutely love this place... The negative comments about the meat quality is baloney...D'AG and Food Emporium have FAR worse selections and the price is practically double...
Recession Special.
This lovely little grocery hidden under the Port Authority has all the convenience of a large corporate supermarket, with the charm of a Mom & Pop shop circa 1955. Upon entering, a would be customer is engaged by lovely smiles and friendly conversations with Big Apple's knowledgeable and courteous staff. Most notably among them is the ever charming Virginia. Feel free to say hello, she can most often be found loitering in front of the main entrance, shouting in broken english on her pre-paid nextel with a Newpo' dangling from her lip.
When it comes to prices, Big Apple won't be beat and when it comes to hygiene Big Apple strictly adheres to the 5 second rule.
Why not stamp your meats with expiration dates?. Big Apple Meat Market sells no prime meats. It sells choice or a lower grade. It does not stamp any expiration date on its meats/poultry. Its sales flyer is only a suggestion as they run out of stock quickly and will not sell a substitute or give you a rain check. If you don't like your dog, buy its meat here.
DIRT CHEAP. We love this place for all kinds of meat and for anything packaged. It's definitely not gourmet, but has lots of random, hard to find products and everything is SUPER cheap! Plus, the farmer's market is right next door, and is also amazingly cheap. Fabulous for dinner party supplies, and they sell a bunch of stuff in bulk. Great find!
