“The atmosphere is pretty neat, the seafood is fresh, but overall I'd say skip it and hop on a cab to Little Italy.”
“From appetizers to dessert, everything is delicious.”
“Order the ceasar salad (crisp romaine, heavy garlic and crunchy croutons - enough for 4), the veal scallopine with white wine, lemon & butter - delicious, and even the chicken parm or rigatoni w/ fresh tomato & shrimp as it's hard to go wrong with these d”
“This is the place to go if you have to pick up the check for Aunt Doris, etc., not for great food!”
“suggest 8 people or more in order to get a taste of a variety of food.”
“The service is sometimes not so great because of the amount of people in the place, but the food is always worth it.”
“I'll definitely have to go back for more when i get another big group of people together and want some delicious italian food.”
“We told the manager the food was excellent, but we were disappointed in the overall service.”
“And don't forget the Titantic before you leave - there is nothing quite like ending a huge meal with a flourless chocolate cake.”
“The wait is always long, so go to the bar for a great cosmopolitian while you wait.”
This big-box homage to the red sauce restaurants of your gets dismissed by many for its comically oversized portions, which seem designed to feed whole families of refugees.
One of my NYC favorites.... Considering all the tourist traps and franchise-type restaurants in Times Sq, it's good for New Yorkers to have a really good Italian restaurant right in the heart of it all. Been here a bunch of times and the food's always been top-notch. I mean, sure it's not the best Italian in the world like when we go to Batali's Babbo, but all the dishes we've ever tried are excellent and the serving sizes are absolutely huge (family-portion or larger!). If you order an appetizer, it's going to be for like 3 or 4 people, no joke. I have a huge appetite, and I always bring home a doggy bag. My faves are the calamari with sauce for appetitzer, and the shrimp diavlo for entree. The shrimp are huge, they must include 15-20 shrimps, and the sauce is perfect...spicy enough to enjoy, but not too hot. Everything else I've gotten has been either very good or great. We always go with other people. The only con might be the noise -its really loud in this place...so dont expect to go here on a romantic date, that would be a bad choice. The service we've gotten has been OK considering how big the place is, and its always packed. Prices are very affordable, absolutely make reservations ahead. Best times to go would be mid-afternoon on a weekend or about 8:00pm on a weekday after the theater crowd has already left to go to their shows. Bottomline...the food's delicious and they give you plenty and price isnt bad. Carmine's... big thumbs up!
Good Price Late Seating. We had a good meal with lots of food for the money. reservation was very slow-made for 4 people for 9:30 and didn't get seated until 10:30. It was the evening of black friday so we were understanding. The food was worth the wait. Will return again.
Decent Italian. Decent Italian Food. Easy to order menu. The lasagna comes in a nice portion and the chicken marsala is tasty. Recommended for large groups.
Big Place, Big Tasting Food. Carmines is a very good place right on the streets of New York City nice and pretty. If you want Italian food and pizza and all of that stuff go there.
VERY GOOD FOOD,A BIT CROWDED AT SHOW TIMES.
FOOD IS VERY GOOD,FAMILY STYLE.
RESERVATIONS A MUST,IT IS THE THEATRE DISTRIC AND YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT WALK INS AT CERTAIN TIMES.
Best marinara sauce and most generous portions in town. In my kids' words: Mom, this is the best food I've ever had. The portions are truly "family size", four could eat from a single order. The place is very crowded but it's easy to understand why. The waiter was not as polite as he should have been, but, hey, it's NY and he was on the go. We are Italian food fans and, believe me, this was the very best in a looonnnggg time. Don't miss it!
Food is awesome but the service is fleeting.
I have gone to this restaurant on many occassions with my family and the food is aswesome.
However, it can only be said that if you don't make reservations in advance you might have to wait for the titatic to arrive to get a table. Moreover, the staff is rude and pushy if you are a couple versus a group as they are so hungry for tips. If you are a couple at this 42nd street location expect to be ignored by your waiter who will be talking up a storm with larger groups. I sugguest to go uptown where the food is awesome and the service really rocks!
Big portions, delicious italian dishes, 2 thumbs up.. Me and 3 others went to Carmine's the other night and had an amazing time. The food was served in huge portions. Top notch, amazing italian dishes! Probably one of my favorites outside of Little Italy of course. Carmine's is an excellent place to go for a group or family dinner. I'll definitely have to go back for more when i get another big group of people together and want some delicious italian food.
Excellent food for the range. Our experience was that the service was prompt and friendly. The food was excellent. The NY taxes were more painful than the cost of the food.
Fantastic for HUNGRY groups out to celebrate - too much food to finish; too much noise for cross-table (from the groups, but now that's just how it is).
my friend and i with the same birthday (but few mutual friends) had a joint dinner with friends at Carmine's midtown - we wanted to have enough food for everyone without any issue of overspending - excellent for that, we couldn't finish 2 appetizers+2 entrees between 8 people. no way to criticize that part in nyc.
The servers were arrogant and tactless, but it was not worth being upset about when the whole theatre district is there. The only FLAW to keep in mind: surcharges for petty stuff like extra marinara are everywhere, and it's a surprise on the bill - obviously it would be unpleasant to ask about an extra charge every time someone wants sauce or bread, so that's your call.Everything, Without Question or Saying so, CHARGED for!!
A friend brought a cake for us - we said we'd eat it at home and they happily insisted that we celebrate there. we said how many slices, but they sliced the whole thing, and hadn't even let us know that we'd be charged per slice. Corking fee is standard of course, but pushing a service without mentioning service charge upfront...and refusing to just bring forks or the bill- the cake she had already paid for ended up costing over $100 to eat. Crazy! Just eat their dessert or something.
Note that it's 4 instead of 3 stars because at the end of the day it's hard to find a place to let loose in a big group, eat your fill, keep a reasonable cost (if you come empty handed ha), take kids, arrange accessibly from wherever everyone lives and get a late reservation or a big group just a few days before
