Closed! – This restaurant is closed. Another victim of New York City real estate. I bet something really good will replace it... like Starbucks.
Never again – I'm really shocked at the amount of decent reviews for this place. A group of 6 of us went here around 10pm on a Saturday night for dinner. After taking our drink orders, we were basically ignored for 20 minutes by our waitress. We weren't even given a basket of bread! We finally snagged her and ordered our meal- apps and entrees. I agree with another review in saying that our waitress (I believe her name was Sonya- that was the name on the check) had obsessive compulsive disorder when it came to ordering your food. I asked what the soup was and she informed me it was sweet potato and when I shook my head no she went on for about 5 minutes on how horrible and sweet the soup is. Very strange. The mussels I ordered for the app were pretty good though. However, when the entrees came, both my pork chop entree as well as my friends were raw in the middle! We had to send them back. Another one of our entrees was too rare and the waitress replied that was the french way of cooking it and if we wanted it done anymore it would be ruined. huh? We're paying for it so cook it the way we like and asked for! After we received our pork chops back we realized that over 1/2 the pork chop was full on fat. It was disgusting. In the end the waitress "generously" offered my one friend a free diet coke (whoopie!) and my other friend a free dessert for her pork chop meal. I was offered nothing for my pork chop so we split the apple tart dessert between the 2 of us... which really wasn't good either. It had zero taste. The worst part was getting the bill and because we were a table of 6 the 20% gratuity was already included. Our waitress did NOT deserve anywhere near that. She was terrible. Like I said before, I think she has OCD and a bad attitude. It was almost like she was practically yelling at us for the way we were ordering our food! I would never return to this restaurant nor would I ever recommend it to anyone.
Best in the theatre district – great place to take your out of town visitors who insist on staying in times square. I had the grilled salmon from the prixe fix- excellent. one of our party had the skate panang and he also raved. the private room in the back is great- go here while you still can (and sign the petition to save it from the developer).
great neighborhood place worth a subway trip to get to – Always a pleasure to have brunch here. My friend and I ordered the eggs benedict and the French toast, and split them between us. Benedict was very good, and the French toast was awesome! At any meal, food has always been excellent actually. Occasionally a bit of stuffiness from a server, but nothing awful. Lovely ambience.
Good food, wonderful ambiance. A neighborhood place worth saving from the real estate monster.... – Excellent pasta and fish disches. Service was very good, with extremely attentive staff, without 'hovering'.
Nice wine selection. This neighborhood institution is slated for closure...apparently the big city real estate machine wants to knock down the building and (probably) install another condo tower of dinky million dollar apartments. The restaurant, menu, and staff are certainly worth saving. The garden is lovely, and was on Saturday, 1/6 - a particularly warm day in New York!
Good pre-show fare – Very good, reliable spot for lunch or pre-theater. Tasty menu and nice ambiance. Recommended. I've returned several times.
Why do they recommend this place – Based on the high reviews of this restaurant, I booked a table for a special event in advance. Basically I'm trying to figure out what all the hubbub is that would result in a 9.0 from CitySearch! My experience was a thumbs down.
You're better off going to any number French Bistros down in the village or around the city IMO. On top of that it's extremely close seating. The place is tiny. Other people on top of you. The food was not outstanding at all and the service was average. I would never go again. The one plus is Gene Bertoncini's guitar work--if you manage to get a table near him.
nice place – we came here for brunch on a saturday afternoon. the waitress was very courteous. she gave us an opinion of what she liked at this little french place. i took her advice and i'm glad i did. if you're heading there for brunch, go for the frittata. you'll be glad you did. there is one thing i was disappointed about. the coffee was lukewarm.
Great food, terrible waitress! – Booked reservations based on readers' reviews and the food definitely lived up to its reputation. However, the waitress was unbelievably bossy and controlling; I believe she may suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder, as it seemed very distressing to her when we did not order our food in just the right way. Extremely odd behavior! Too bad for an otherwise wonderul restaurant!
Fire the p.m. host, then you will have something – After making a reservation for three people weeks in advance and confirming it the day before we were met by a rude host who insisted the reservation was for two. After saying, "Well, that's gonna be a problem," he did not say a single word to us. Then after a few uncomfortable minutes he showed us to a table. Never saying a word. Did I mention that we arrived at 4:45 p.m. and there was only one occupied table in the place. Our waiter was not what you would call warm. I think he was actually bothered that we were there. The food however was exceptional and the price-fix theater menu was great. Get rid us the snooty, couldn't be bothered help and this place could be a jewel.
