The stately doyen of Manhattan Italian restaurants.

What Our Expert Scouts Say

October 18, 2012

It's expensive, fogey-ish, and as formal as an audience with the pope. But it's also a vanishing breed of old, elegant, and refined Italian restaurants from before the age of babbo.

Wonderful. This palce is great. Its very beautiful. Wonderful service they have several rooms and we got to go up stairs where a staff took several pictures of us. The food was good not the best but they get forgiven for wonderful service. We also got free strawberries that were so delicious. I truly have have no complaints. I would go again, I reccomend highly.

A beautiful oasis to dine. I have been to Barbetta many times and I find the latest reviews pretty unfair and inappropriate. I admit that the decor is not everybody's taste, but this historic restaurant is certainly unique and deserves a lot more respect. There must be a reason why this place is around for more than 100 years and there are indeed many: Whoever looks for a romantic, quiet, and cozy place to eat off the bustling and hectic streets of New York should go to Barbetta. In particular, the beautifully lit and decorated garden transforms you into another world, you will not believe that you sit in a restaurant in Manhattan. The food has always been tasty, delicious, and original, I can highly recommend the gnocchetti, the ravioli, the lamb, or any dessert. The wine list is impressive. I hope that Barbetta stays around for many more years and that the customers appreciate the beauty of the garden and the great taste of the food.

STALE. I never in my 37years of life ever felt the way I did in this STALE restaurant.... This restuarant was rated to be one of the top romantic place to eat!!! I wonder how this person gets paid ? Lights where at the fullist the flowers on the table were plastic and the lights on the table were expose....... I would not recommed this place to anyone STALE STALE STALE....It would be better at a commercial food chain restuarant>>>>also why over price on everything

I can't believe we stayed for dinner! The Worst!. We were rudely addressed at the door by the 'hostess' (hopefully not the owner?!?!) who didn't even show us to the dining room. There was only one other table occupied, but we were still treated as if it were an inconvenience that we had a reservation here. The wait staff was obnoxious and rude. (except for the bus boys) The meal was completely overpriced and I believe we were charged for a full portion of risotto, but were served only half portion. Do yourself a favor and go to John's for pizza instead!

Embarrassingly Awful. This place is a disaster. I am so angry at the price I was charged for a mediocre meal and a few glasses of wine. The wine list was appalling, offering only a choice of around 4 red wines by the glass - each priced from $14 to $16 dollars! I looked it up online as I sat at the table and a full bottle of the wine I had with dinner was $19 for a full bottle. I understand a markup, but come on folks, that is just ridiculous. The waiter was unknowledgeable and didn't check on us once. There was no music or entertainment as their website states - all you hear is clattering plate noises and chatter. The room is completely out dated, the bathroom is gross. I would've opted for a pre-theater slice of pizza than give these guys my hard earned money. 100 years is long enough - let this place go!

Avoid, especially pretheater. Overpriced old restaurant with indifferent snooty service and mediocre quality food at a high price! Don't drink the "house wine"...at $50 a bottle is not good. Go elsewhere especially pretheater...there are plenty of better nearby restaurants. Also, make sure you check your credit card receipt before you sign it.

New York's Finest. Barbetta is still one of NYC's finest restaurants. The decor is gorgeous and the food is always wonderful. I love how it is so different from all the other cookie cutter elegant dinning experiences in NY. I do not know anyone who has not loved the food here or how amazing the decor is!!! Perfect place for a romantic night out. Or even for special occasions, I just ate there last week with my family for a birthday and we loved it!!

Just okay.... We had dinner here after reading how romantic this restaurant was. We were seated in the garden, next to the door with all the waiters going in and out of the garden. I had the canneloni and beef dish for dinner - that was pretty good. My husband had the rabbit - which was just ok. Food was fast so we definetely had enough time before our show, but service definetely lacked. Our waiter wasn't very helpful in describing the dishes to us and never really came back to check on us until it was time for him to serve us dessert. The restaurant is very beautiful, the garden as well but the food and service doesn't hold up to that standard. I'm sure there are other restaurants out there that can be just as romantic and have great food and service.

Perfect evening. I was Damek's date and agree with everything he says (see below.) I would like to add that the waiters were attentive, but not clingy, so you didn't have to wait long for service, but you still had privacy. We were seated next to the fountain, and my legs got bitten by insects, so either dress appropriately or request a table around the outside. Even though they forgot the appetizers, they more than made up for it with complimentary food, which was some of the best Italian food I've ever had. Overall, an excellent night.

Excellent service, outstanding food, romantic atmosphere. My date and I had the best night here. The food was outstanding (and largely organic/free-range, which was a pleasant surprise). We sat outside in the garden and enjoyed the weather & fountain. The serving staff actually forgot to bring our appetizers, but the waiter was charmingly distressed and made everything right. I could tell from other guests dining inside that this also makes a good family destination, but definitely leans towards romantic and couples. I would highly recommend Barbetta to anyone looking for a perfect, lovely evening. Food and service to die for.
