Editorial Review for Hotel Edison – by Gayot.com

The Scene
Billed as New York's "Art Deco hotel," this property mimics the stylized form of Radio City Music Hall and dates back to 1931. Walk in and your gaze falls on the lobby's giant wall murals depicting the flapper life. Lobby clocks displaying time in various global zones add to the anachronistic mood. Still, the hotel is very much in the present: the Virgin Megastore and other hot spots are right next door, as are Broadway's most popular theaters.

The Details
The 1,000 rooms are large and spotless, with good-sized closets, color TVs and air conditioners. The managers have done their best to keep up with the times, so heavy draperies and dated armchairs and armoires mingle with streamlined bedspreads. The Cafe Edison features warp-speed waiters and terrific Eastern-European Jewish dishes. There is a gift shop on the premises where you can pick up souvenirs.

Our high school musical group from Kansas booked this hotel through a travel agent, who requested that the group be in rooms close to each other. Four boys and 2 male sponsors were put on floor 12. One room with 4 17 year old girls were put on another floor. and my 15 year old daughter ,6 year old girl, 17 and 19 year old girl were put on floor 4. When the sponsor after checking in requested they all be put on the same floor he was told the hotel was full, we had made reservations in January, this is June. If your child is staying with a group in this hotel don't assume they will be on same floor as their sponsors, also some rooms were in very poor condition, But as a parent safety and security are my first concerns, unfortunately it is not a concern of the hotel.

Pros: close to shows

Cons: no concern to quests concerns

I just returned from a hotel stay there [11/23/07]. We wanted a place central to everything in NYC for my sister's birthday. Knowing it was a budget-based hotel, my expectations weren't all that high, however there were some major concerns. There was a hole in the wall from a chair, the beds are as hard as rocks, they should have invested in some new mattresses during their "rennovation". Towls were crunchy and there was hair in the bathroom. Worst part- we found 3 c0ckr0aches in our room, one of which ran across my face in the middle of the night! Disgusting, Not recommended.

Pros: Location, security

Cons: Hygiene issues, hard beds
