The Scene
This small hotel offers a tranquil B&B-like atmosphere in the middle of the Midtown Manhattan mayhem. Formerly four townhouses, its layout is unique--hallways go off in every direction and there are multiple staircases to the upper floors. There's a reason why many of the inn's guests are return customers. The service here is impeccable. The staff has a reputation for prolific deeds. For example, when you head out for a day of sightseeing, they give you a card with the hotel's number on it and encourage you to call if you have any questions about touring or directions throughout your day.
The Details
The three-floor walkup offers many services, including--thank heavens--a bellman who will lug your bags to your room. The rooms are smartly designed and include modern art prints. (Impressionists hang in the corridors). Despite the chaos just outside you can actually get a quiet night's sleep since the hotel's windows are double paned. For a great view of the classic New York City bustle, ask for a corner room.

Stayed six nights February 2006; a mixed bag. Good: amazingly cheap considering the excellent Times Square location. I got a double suite for $216 a night. And very quiet with double windows closed. Not so good: the suite was a tiny main room with barely enough space for two full beds and some thrift-store furniture, and a kind of annex maybe 1/3 the size of the main room with a sofa crammed into it that expanded into two twin trundle beds. The full beds were very, very firm, and while I thought the trundle beds were not bad considering, they hurt my wifes back. The hot water in the shower was a little dodgy (never ran out, though), and the rooms were pretty stuffy, but if you opened the windows it was like sleeping in the middle of the street. Still, it was okay, saved a lot of dough.

We visited for four days over Christmas and loved the location - easy walks to Times Square and theatres as well as to the subway. Great friendly service. Good continental breakfast with friendly and helpful staff. This 40 room b & b reminded us of small Paris hotels we have stayed in. We will definitely go back.
Pros: fantastic location, good price, comfortable setting
Cons: small room
