Editorial Review for Manhattan Plaza Health Club – by Tony Phillips
The Scene
This club's "All fitness, no attitude" motto plays out in both the renovated premises and no-nonsense trainers. Yes, the retractable-roof pool dotted with palm trees and a 5,000-square-foot rock climbing area spell luxe, but the fact that these amenities sit atop subsidized artist housing keeps the bottom line in check. Plus, reasonable day passes make it easy to try before you buy.
The Workout
Activity can be as strenuous as driving a fork into your poolside salad or indulging in a Swedish massage. For those more serious about their regime, each new member receives two personal training sessions from a staff member eager to tailor a program to your individual goals, while simultaneously introducing you to sometimes daunting state-of-the-art equipment like the Stairmaster Gravitrons, which are nicely spaced on the robust gym floor. Over 85 classes, from Virtual Reality spinning to kick boxing with full-size heavy bags, round out your options.

I joined two years ago. I learned to swim there. Once people began to recognise me..they'd make comments about how I swam...There are many people that don't seem clean and older people with sagging skin that walk about un clothed. I got ill alot. The water is cold. Sometimes the whirl pool is a little slimy. In one class...I took a 2 lb weight. I look in shape but I'm not. The teacher...Raven...gave me a four lb weight and I was so sore the next day...The quiet room isn't always quiet. The whole place annoyed me...But there was no attitude.
Pros: convenient
Cons: not always clean/people not always clean/some trainers push too far

As a personal training virgin, I was hesitant to choose someone from a picture and short bio, and really didn't want some initmidating muscle-head who just checks himself out in the mirror the entire time (as I'm sure you've seen at other gyms). So I went, on recommendation, to Steven at MPHC for my free first session, and have been hooked ever since. He is knowledgable, fun, friendly and works you out very, very hard, the right way (not to mention cute). I've never been bored, and I've never felt better. Steven rocks!
Pros: clean, affordable, modern. Fantastic pool.
