Escape to this rock-climbing, lap-swimming oasis near 10th Avenue, where few tourists care to venture. Lounge by the pool with your Kindle, bake in the sauna, get a massage, or tackle the modest climbing wall.
convenient location. This gym is a convenient location. The cardio area is just horrible. They really need to invest in new equipment up there. There is no need for like 13 treadmills either. Take out the 4 in the back and 3 of the stair climbers that NO BODY ever uses and place other things instead. Elliptical machines are pretty bad and forget trying to get on a decent machine between 5-7. The "quiet" room is ALWAYS packed and when it is, there is NO room to stretch out, which is disgustingly annoying. The locker room is NOT impressive. For 85 bucks a month, this gym could use some revamping! PLEASE, I beg of you- invest in new machines switch things up!!!!!!!!!
MPHC good for rock climbing. I am very unhappy with this establishment. I haven't used the climbing wall myself, but hear that the climbing wall is the best feature in this health club. Pool is nice, too. This just isn't the health club for me.
No Attitude. I joined two years ago. I learned to swim there. Once people began to recognise me..they'd make comments about how I swam...There are many people that don't seem clean and older people with sagging skin that walk about un clothed. I got ill alot. The water is cold. Sometimes the whirl pool is a little slimy. In one class...I took a 2 lb weight. I look in shape but I'm not. The teacher...Raven...gave me a four lb weight and I was so sore the next day...The quiet room isn't always quiet. The whole place annoyed me...But there was no attitude.
This home for fitness extends beyond basic gym into tennis courts with commanding skyline views.. This club's "All fitness, no attitude" motto plays out in both the renovated premises and no-nonsense trainers. Yes, the retractable-roof pool dotted with palm trees and a 5,000-square-foot rock climbing area spell luxe, but the fact that these amenities sit atop subsidized artist housing keeps the bottom line in check. Plus, reasonable day passes make it easy to try before you buy. Activity can be as strenuous as driving a fork into your poolside salad or indulging in a Swedish massage. For those more serious about their regime, each new member receives one personal training session from a staff member eager to tailor a program to your individual goals, while simultaneously introducing you to sometimes daunting state-of-the-art equipment like the Stairmaster Gravitrons, which are nicely spaced on the robust gym floor.
Ask for Steven G. As a personal training virgin, I was hesitant to choose someone from a picture and short bio, and really didn't want some initmidating muscle-head who just checks himself out in the mirror the entire time (as I'm sure you've seen at other gyms). So I went, on recommendation, to Steven at MPHC for my free first session, and have been hooked ever since. He is knowledgable, fun, friendly and works you out very, very hard, the right way (not to mention cute). I've never been bored, and I've never felt better. Steven rocks!
Hawaii in Manhattan. MPFH is like an island of sanity and peace in a world that doesn't know how to stop. This club is like no other in New York--pool, tennis, climbing room, 10-12 classes a day PLUS 6-8 in water aerobics; swim team; and stroke clinic INCLUDED in membership fee. I commute between France and the States and this Staff has been wonderful about helping me in so many ways with my membership needs. AND a beautiful health oriented Cafe (Cafe Vanilla) with floor to ceiling windows and Manhattan skyline views! I take my lap top and have the most peaceful writer's office in the city. I can't say enough about what a God-send this club is! Best Kept not-so-Secret in Manhattan. Thank you!
staff w/attitude!. we were greeted with a very unfriendly, rude greeting upon arriving to the club...not to mention the girl at the desk was having a social phone conversation for the entirety of our visit with the gym. we had to ask for a tour of the gym and definitely was not "sold" on the club. great value and convenient, but that's all.
tropical palace.
I love it!! At first I was scared about the enviroment, but then the staff warmed right up to me and made me feel at home. The place has expanded in all it's areas, including the pool, which is a tropical palace now.
The staff was very helpful with any questions I had.
I give the club two thumbs up and five stars!!!!!
And make sure to hit the climbing gym to see how really hardcore you can be. And the fact that the climbing gym doesn't have a bathroom is the only thing lacking.
Not a typical NYC club!!. The reception staff wear a shirt stating, "All fitness, no attitude" and I find this to be most accurate. Every time I am at the club, the entire staff is very amiable and helpful! I am not much of a swimmer but the pool (tropical island) is the best place in town to escape NYC. Even though the workout floor is small, the trainers have taught me creative exercises that I never even knew existed! I can't imagine ever joining another gym. I give it two thumbs up.
