Editorial Review for J & R Music and Computer World – by Boris Kachka
In Short
One store with 10 separate entrances can become confusing, but each one is a self-sufficient unit with its own specialized suit-and-tie staff, who are generally eager to please. J & R sells home appliances, videogames and anything else that fits into its 300,000-square-foot line of stores along Park Row. Carrying every major brand of audio, video, camera and computer equipment, it's the ideal store for the home shopper, but with enough high-end components--amps, headphones, mixers--for the pros, particularly musicians.

After our horrible experience at Best Buy (see my review for the one on Broadway), we went to J and R. We were out of there in 10 minutes with our plasma TV. Our salesman was knowledgeable, no-nonsense and efficient. He did not try to swindle us like Best Buy did. Highly recommended. We will from now on get all our electronic purchases there.
Pros: Customer service, selection
Cons: None

I first heard about this place cause they have very distinct shopping bags for customers carrying their recently purchased products. It seemed like so many people were walking around with their light-blue bags so I check it out. Computers were pretty good, nothing isanely awesome and I would much rather shop online for all this stuff. However, prices for are extremely compeititve if not the best you will find in a retail store anywhere in NYC. I would say if you have to buy in-store electronics, check out the price here and just try to find a lower one. You probably won't. They really keep them quite low, I was going to buy my TV from them and decided not to cause I didn't want to pay tax. But the price for the TV was just as low as all these random places online, even eBay! However, I will say that their staff (minus the woman in the cell phone section who got me my wife's Nokia) if overall extremely unpleasent and quite annoying to deal with. They aren't complete jerks, they just seem tired, overworked, and frustrated with their jobs (which probably also means they are too uncaring to pitch something to you so that could be construed as a good thing..) Don't go here without knowing pretty much what you want to get. I would hate to half to ask those people "which home surround sound i should get based on my square footage?" Eesh.
Pros: huuuge stores, good prices, good sleection
Cons: staff could be a bit more normal or helpful, no parking anywhere (what do you expect?)
