Editorial Review for Federal Reserve Bank of New York – by Citysearch Staff
Banking History
The Florentine palazzo form of this building was chosen for its association with the Medicis and other leading Renaissance families whose fortunes were made from banking. In 1969 that framework earned the building historical landmark status, but for most folks the value of this bank stems from its collection of coins spanning 3,000 years and the vault with billions of dollars worth of international monetary gold.
Fiscal Functions
The FRBNY draws up monetary policies and monitors depository institutions while serving as the banker for New York state, parts of Connecticut and New Jersey, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. While that region is the smallest geographically for any of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks, the New York Fed is the largest in terms of assets and activity.
