Cardamom creme brulee - WOW! – Five star surprise! What a charming place! And the portions and options, zowee!
We were looking for a little lunch before going to the Jewish Museum and after some searching ran across Table D'Hote. Entering the door, we were instantly charmed by the interior and were quickly seated and given menus to peruse. I was smitten with the $19.50 prix fixe lunch menu. Thus decided, I ordered the mixed green salad, salmon and cardamom creme brulee.
The salad arrived and while it was fresh and crisp, it lacked "sparkle" - by this, I mean that it was simply dressed with a little oil but some lemon or vinegar might have added just the right touch. As it was, I ended up trying to salt it (I rarely find the need to salt my food) and over-salted it to the point that I believe I killed the poor salad.
The salmon arrived next, and the portion was quite generous. It was crispy on the outside and firm on the inside, cooked exactly as I'd requested. It was well-seasoned and I enjoyed every bite.
The cardamom creme brulee arrived next, and our server was kind enough to include the lemon pound cake with citrus creme anglaise as well (I think he felt bad as the hubs didn't order off the prix fixe and was dessertless). Oh my - both were amazing! I couldn't get enough, and the hubs had to pry me away from the table to as not to miss the museum.
Our service was perfect and made the experience over-the-top great. We'll be back!
Near 92nd St. Y and well worth the trip – Everyone feels treated by a meal at Table d'Hote. It's a New York institution that never lets down in terms of interesting menu and top quality. Veg plate is generous to a fault. Everyone is happy after a meal here, and holidays are outstanding, with a specially printed menu to keep. It's almost unheard of that a place never lets down, but this is a sturdy top choice if you have to choose a (usually too expensive and disappointing) restaurant in Carnegie Hill. Don't go to Sarabeth's! Go around the corner, have no lines, and have a memorable haute meal at Table d'Hote for same price. Great wine list and reasonable. Intimate and friendly, unintimidating service. Gorgeous soups: excellent first course. Gorgeous desserts too.
No French food here! – We discovered this charming looking so called french restaurant and decided to try it out. Well we had not even sat down as the waiter came to the table and ask: "Want wine?" From there it was downhill: The country pate was mediocre, the pureed vegetable soup was the best of all, even though salt and pepper was necessary to give it some more than blend taste. The Muscat wine was blend it almost tasted watered down. The Hangar steak had no taste as well as the sauce. The same could be said for the mashed potatoes, at least the vegetables had some taste of garlic. Pound cake and raspberry sorbet tasted like from the corner store and rightfully so we saw them getting delivered by a ice cream truck later. I mean $95 for a three course meal with wine is not a bad prize but for this meal it was way to much. The only thing french here are the names of the dishes.
I said the atmosphere was nice but only because this place is so small. There was no music playing and the two waiter were even in this small place hard to catch. I believe in a small place like this the waiter should be very personable, friendly and knowledgeable but that was not the case here.
Over all save those $100 bucks and take them somewhere else.
Not French, not fresh, awful service: waste of time and money – A lunch of soggy mesculun dressed with cheap oil, an entree of off-smelling "steak," with mashed potatoes, stale bread and a dessert of creme brulee with an oily film prompted me to write this. The service matched the food: When I brought the condition of the greens to the waiter, his response was that they had been delivered that morning.No offer to replace it. My friend and I left most of our lunch on the plate. But the best came last: After we had paid and were out the door, the waiter came running after us just as we were turning on to Madison. "Miss, Miss!" he shouted. I turned around, thinking I had left something. "You forgot the tip! " he gasped, out of breath. It was the perfect ending.
Excellent food – I started going here this winter and the food was amazing. I've been recommending this place to folks ever since. Service was polite and helpful. I found the menu to be creative and each item we had was delicious. The dining area is cozy, but a bit tight and almost always packed for dinner. You definitely need a reservation. However even with our reservations, each time our seating was delayed. The place opens a bit late for brunch, so you can't catch an early breakfast. Other than that, this was a great option for the UES.
A big No NO – This place was anything but French. The food was OK and the price was way too high for OK food. Will definitely NOT visit there again. They also need to train their waitstaff, who puts ice in wine ?????.
Madison Ave Counts For Something... – Average and overpriced is what first comes to mind. The food was acceptable, very overpriced, and had no resemblance of French Cuisine. Plates were pretty, the room was small and cozy, and the ambiance was nice. The menu lacked any kind of cohesiveness, but seemed more of a jumbled idea. The service was lacking, one server works the room, and the room is small, but you may not hear from him for quite some time (especially after your wine has arrived and you have already had a glass, working on the second, waiting to place your order). With the bad service, the adaquate food, the check will seem surprising, but hey your on Madison Ave, isn't that what matters?
Delicious! – Superb food. Excellent service. Almost perfect ambiance - it was a bit cold, we had to ask the waiter to turn down the A/C a couple of times. Small space, doesn't work for groups larger than 4 people.
A Jewel of a Restaurant – Simply one of the best kept secrets in New York City. I would highly recommend Table D'hote to anyone for top-rate food, attentive service and a welcoming ambience. I promise you'll want to return week after week . . .
Awful service – Great french cusine , the soups are amazing. A little overprice and, unfortunatly, the waiter needs some "french manners". He gave us a lecture about how "raw tuna steak" should look white and chunky
