Editorial Review for Barking Dog Luncheonette – by Raven Snook
In Short
This restaurant is a must for dog fans. Everywhere you look there are dog statuettes, canine clocks, puppy posters and photos of celebrities posing with their best friends. Real dogs, unfortunately, are not allowed on the premises. The menu offers basic luncheonette fare, with adjustments made for the Upper East Side clientele (yogurt instead of ice cream, granola in lieu of sprinkles). Burgers served on focaccia are highly praised, as is the meatloaf.

I used to live next store and frequent this location quite often, but after this morning I will never go again. First, we sat in a booth and noticed that the entire wall was covered with little black specs (fruit flies and nats to be exact). We requested to be moved to the bar area, and the hostess simply sat someone else in our place. Once we sat at the bar the waiter disappeared and we received no service with the exception of receiving our food. When we received our food, it was cold and was missing items that we had to call out and have someone follow up with. As we ate, we watched the person behind the counter count money, clean the floor, touch everthing in sight, and then handle fruit with his bare hands. I almost threw up!! I will never go to this filthy place again. The food is lousy, the service is awful, and our overall experience was disgusting. We shared our feelings with the manager who staired at us as if I have two heads. A couple waiting in line was turned off and left, so I suppose we're almost even. Hopefully, this review will convince you to keep on walking as there are many better places on the UES.
Cons: dirty, expensive

I recently moved to the neighborhood and am a major foodie, therefor I am looking for a few places to be a regular at. I went to the barking dog on a sunday with my friend for lunch. There was no wait, but there were deffinetly a good number of people in there. The food was ok, if a little overpriced (but it is the UES so that's to be expected). What was absolutely unforgivable though was the service. Our order was taken and brought to us in a timely manner but after that it was all downhill. My friend and I were chatting and the waitress took our drinks away, each with a little bit left in them. Then she came back to clear our water. As if this wasn't bad enough she then pulled the placemat out from under my friend's arms, literally making her fall onto the table, with no apology from the server. There were tables open, we had ordered a decent amount of food, there was no reason to rush us out. Upon leaving I mentioned our server's behavior to the manager. He called her over and her response was "oh, I was just trying to clear." Now I've eaten in a lot of restaurants and my friend use to be a server...I believe you're supposed to wait until the customers leave to clear the table. Don't bother with this mediocre joint.
Cons: cash only, waitstaff doesn't have a clue about service
