The Scene
Built on five acres of city-owned property, Asphalt Green is a not-for-profit sports venue with incredibly varied programming. Where else would you find pregnant teens from Inwood House relaxing in a small water pool (with a hydraulic floor) while nearby geriatric ladies who lunch swim Olympic-length laps under a luminous skylight of fogged glass? Separate dressing rooms are provided for members and guests, but everyone has access to a steamroom.
The Workout
Free weights and Nautilus are practically passe--but available--at this gym, which has both FitLinxx (a simulated trainer attached to the exercise machines) and a handicapped-accessible universal fitness station. With four basketball courts (three outdoors), an astroturfed athletic field (baseball, softball, lacrosse, etc.), a running track (accessible to the public) and even a little theater where puppet shows are regularly performed, this place dwarfs other health clubs in terms of physical magnitude, class options and community outreach.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe pool is shut down yearly--usually from around August 20 to Labor Day--in order to give it a thorough cleaning. The rest of the time, even non-members can gain access for a fee.
The ExtrasBeyond Pilates, aerobics and yoga, this health club also offers less commonplace courses in African dance, volleyball and various martial arts. Plus, there's triathlete training!
ParkingAsphalt Green members (and program users) can get a discount on parking at the Brittany Garage located at 441 E 92nd Street between York Avenue and First Avenue.

This is one fantastic place. The staff is friendly, the pool is amazing, the fitness center has awesome classes. It's such a gem on the Upper East Side.

The fitness center overlooks the river and is beautiful, the pool is amazing and the staff is extremely friendly. Asphalt Green is a 10 across the boards.
