Editorial Review for Gracie Mansion – by Jessica Branch
Overview
The original house was commandeered by General George Washington during the Revolutionary War for its strategic command of Hell Gate (the juncture of the East River, the Harlem River and the Long Island Sound), but the house and the fortifications Washington constructed were destroyed by the British in 1776. In 1799, Scottish shipping magnate Archibald Gracie built the house that's served as the official mayoral residence of New York City ever since Robert Moses convinced Fiorello LaGuardia to start the tradition in 1942.
Features
The two-story Federal mansion is notable for its wooden trellis roof rails and the extensive porch that takes full advantage of the splendid river views. Its chequered career includes stints as a private residence, parks service building, ice-cream parlor and home of the Museum of the City of New York. Mayor Lindsay, among others, endowed the building with an extensive collection of period-appropriate furnishings, while the Wagner Wing, added in 1966, pays tribute to the residence's increased use in official city functions.
