In Short – The original opened as a speakeasy in 1926, and the other locations retain much of that atmosphere, with deep velvet benches and wooden tables topped with white tablecloths. Alongside the USDA-prime, dry-cut steaks, the menu features standard steakhouse fare: appetizers like shrimp cocktail, fresh oysters and clams, an array of salads, soups, pastas and vegetable sides, and non-steak entrees as well--filet mignon, lamb, veal and pork chops, lobster and more.

So so at best

I have eaten in many steakhouses across the country, and have lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for over 60 years. While Peter Luger will never be topped, I have rarely eaten in a steakhouse where i left unhappy. UNTIL TONIGHT. I took my son and my sister out to dinner at Frankie and Johnnies in Rye and was very disappointed in the service and the food. The salads and crab cake were good. The steak of all things was NOT. We ordered out steaks medium and medium well..... they came out RARE. I never complain and never "under-tip" but this was not worth $250 for 3 people. I'm sorry but for $80 plus per person I would like to leave satisfied. And I DID NOT. My son had the Fliet Mignon on the special list and it was $58 and rare. The porterhouse at Peter Luger is the best meat you will ever have and that is $76 FOR TWO!!!!. If the food was good and we were impressed with the service then I would not have cared one bit about the money. But like i said. Overpriced and simply not worth it.

HORIFFIC!! I have never experienced such disgust!!!

by vsutton88 at Citysearch

Never in my life have I ever experienced such a horrible waiting experience. Several friends and I went out for a friend's 21st birthdat party and were treated like dirt. Actually, I believe dirt may have recieved better service. The waiter had a nasty attitude and got the birthday girl's order wrong. He then began to argue that she had ordered shrimp but she told him calmly that she was allergic and that he must have heard her wrong. Really, she was too nice if you ask me because porkchop sounds nothing like shrimp. He yelled at her and refered to us as "you people". I doubt he meant young twentysomethings (what he meant was monorities). He made my friend cry and walked away. We waited for 20 minutes then everyone else ate and the birthday girl called another waitor to get the manager. That took 15 minutes and he told us he was sorry about the waiter's behavior and that they've gotten complaints about him before. we asked for our check. He took off drinks which was nothing because only one person ordered a pepsi. We spent over $250 for 5 people to eat and you take off the pepsi? The manager was afraid of his own waiter and an idiot. The waiter was a (word they want let me use) idiot and deserves to go to hell. My friend left the place hungry and feeling low on her birthday. We all lost about $50 and the mood was destroyed. To top it off the only good thing one of my friend's ordered was the porkchop and the birthday girl never got a chance to eat it because she waited for her own that never came. Head over to the other nice restaurants in Rye with better food and service. Save yourself the trip!!! I've been waitressing for years and dining at nice restaurants for twice that so trust me Frankies' and Johnnnies in Rye is a low class dump. The one in manhattan is better.

So so experience, a service stumble

by hasterok at Citysearch

Cons: 8pm reservations, weren't seated until 8:40p. They apologized, at least, but no offer of a drink or appetizer. Hostess was at times in a full run in the middle of the restaurant trying to seat people....admirable effort but disorganized and unprofessional. Waiter disappeared for 15 minutes after drink orders, and was in a hurry to take our orders and move on with his life. Had no interest in discussing the menu. Water glasses continually left unfilled. Sirloin was was quite sinewy and not the quality I've had at Sparks, Del Friscos, Wolfgangs, Ben Bensons, etc. Mashed potatoes were dry and unappealing. Lighting is very harsh upstairs. Prices in line with Manhattan....but you're in Rye.

Pros: Beautiful space, fireplace lit with candles, sweeping second floor, primo location. Lobster cocktail was decent, as was the creamed spinach. Filet was very good. Bustling for a cold Thursday night. Busy bar scene.
