There are Irish bars, and there are Irish bars. The Rover is one of the latter. This isn't a St. Patrick's day-themed bro-hole; nor is it even the Old Country Pubbe, made up for archaic effect, that you sometimes see in Manhattan. This is as Irish as it gets, so much so that saying the wrong thing about politics could get you killed. There used to be a bunch of such places on the west side, when the west side was tough. Now you have to go to Astoria to experience it.

Tips for Irish Rover

IRISH PUB.
If you want to be treated in a hostile manner and be discriminated because of your Ethnicity, Irish Rover is the perfect place for you.
Despite visiting the place for over an year, the bartenders (who are here on a visitor's visa and are not allowed to work here) will charge you more money if you are not Irish.
There is a Happy Hour but I have never been given any discount despite leaving 75% tips.
A place where only Irish , from the right side , are welcome.
The atmosphere is downright hostile.
If I never visit the place again, it will be too soon!!

Friendly Bar, Good People.. I've seen the Rover grow over time. Respectable gents run the place, they know how to handle a thirsty crowd, or just chill with the late-night barfly types. It's a down-to-earth feel, always welcoming you. I will echo that it's a great place for meeting people in NYC. Always a story to tell.

The Scene
A sign reading "No jeans, no service" could hang above the brass-poled bar at this ultra casual spot for every Sean, Kevin and Patrick this side of the G train. Instead, however, there hangs a sculptural ode to the working man: one artist's rendering of the famous 1936 photo of construction workers eating lunch on a skyscraper's precarious crossbeam. Cheers to hard work and hard play. Everyone seems to know everyone else--betcha their families do, too.
The Draw
The game du jour is broadcast on the big-screen TV in back, flanked by two coveted dartboards, which have taken trophy-winning jabs for years. The bartenders do more pouring of Blue Moon and Guinness than mixing, but are happy to oblige any straight-ahead cocktail cravings.

3rd drink always free. Warm bartenders. No attitude.. It's a great local bar, cheap as hell with friendly Irish bar tenders. The clientele reflect the diversity of Astoria. Last night my girlfriend and I talked to actors, a Billboard magazine columnist, a Brazilian dancer and lots of friendly Irish people. Why can't our American bars manufacture this charm? This pub is a gem.

A Great Bar. The Rover is my favorite Astoria Bar. The bartenders are friendly Irish guys that know how to pour a Guiness and always give you the third round for free. The jukebox has great music, the bathrooms are clean, and it's a great place to meet people. Every person that I've ever taken here becomes a regular. Best kept secret in Astoria.

Annaliese's favorite bar. This is my favorite bar and the bartenders are awesome. I love the music and the crowd is definitely interesting. Good place to relax after work or listen to music to on the weekends.

Irish Rover Bartenders Rule. I'm sure 1000 people have already said that the Irish Rover is the best neighborhood bar in Astoria. Every time I go there, the bartender always throws me 'n' the boys a free round.

Terrific neighborhood dive bar.
The Rover is one of the best neighborhood dive bars I've ever seen. The Guiness is cold and scrumptious. The bartenders are friendly (and, yes, they give buy-backs like every good bar should). The decor is cozy---seemingly 200-year-old wooden walls and squeaky floors abound. It has a wonderfully subdued atmosphere, and a very cool selection of tunes in the juke. Gets pretty crowded on weekends (you should go there and get drunk on a Sunday afternoon).
I wouldn't say---as the preceeding reviewer did---that it's the greatest bar in NYC though. That title is reserved for the Rover's Astoria neighbor: The one, the only...Gibney's. Cheers everyone.
