Best Greek restaurant in NY. As an "authentic" Greek (meaning born & raised in Greece), I have a special relationship with Greek restaurants in the US. Specifically, I can judge which ones serve food that is "Greek" only in name, and most are like that. However in Astoria there are a few restaurants that do serve good, authentic greek cuisine, and after multiple "experimentation" I have concluded that Stamatis (careful, the one on 23rd) is the best. You can't go wrong with most dishes and the environment is nice, the prices good. Careful though, as it can be a little too busy/crowded esp. on weekends.
Freshly Prepared Daily. Delicious freshly prepared foods every afternoon. Walking in passed the steam counter is nice to view all the hot foods to select from. The prices are reasonably and service at lunch time has been good consistently. Staff seems friendly.
One of the best taverna experiences anywhere!. I think I have been enjoying meals with friends and family at Stamatis for at least 20 years. The food is usually excellent and often wildly outstanding. When they are at their best, the kitchen at Stamatis is out of this world and it seems that whoever is at the helm has been inspired by the gods themselves. (I have the same experience at the Turkish restaurant, Beyti Kebab in Weehawken.) We have celebrated so many wonderful occasions at Stamatis and always left feeling completely sated and wonderfully satisfied with the food and the service. They are extremely patient and accommodating for the large groups we tend to come with. We love the hustle and bustle of the place that could be on the waterfront of any Mediterranean city. The new location hasn't changed anything! It is still fabulous. I still the place close friends and family choose to go to right before a long journey. In fact I am leaving to go to dinner there right now to wish some cousins farewell before an extended trip to Tanzania!!!
Best Authentic Greek Food in NYC!!. This newly renovated restaurant is naturally packed because of the great food and the unbeatable prices. A down side to packed restaurants is usually bad service, but not if you ask for Pamala to serve you! You'll have the best Greek dish that you can get plus a Greek experience, miles away from Greece. All that for a great price and with very hospitable service with a beautiful smile!!!!!!! I've been to most of the restaurants in Astoria and NYC, and this one is by far the best package!!!
Greek for Greeks. Take it from a Greek who knows. This is authentic Greek. if you want overpriced americanized fair try something else. for the real deal in astoria, this is it!
Editorial Review. Classic Greek restaurant in Astoria serves grilled meat and seafood dishes in a coastal-themed setting.
Not that clean. This place is a local eatery that has food triple decked on the steam table (definately not safe) I'm not sure how many times this food goes in & out of the refrigerator but what we tried wasnt as we expected. There are so many Great Greek restaurants but this one needs some cleaning.
Stamatis takes advantage at Greek Orthodox Easter.
We arrived at 2pm. We ordered a salad and the traditional meal of roast lamb (menu price $12). After we finished our salad our waitress told us that they had run out of roast lamb and pastitichio. She suggested baby lamb instead (menu price $18). We said okay. The table behind us was very upset saying "koirodevunee to kosmo" "they are fooling the public" This is because they were seating people without saying they had run out of lamb--and at just 2 in the afternoon!!! When the bill came---not only did we not get what we originally wanted--roast lamb at $12, but now we were being charged not just $18 for baby lamb BUT $20 BECAUSE "IT IS EASTER"
We are outraged that this restaurant planned so poorly on such an important holiday and ran out of the traditional food and then had the nerve to fleece us too!!
Poor Unfriendly Service. The cooks in the front are very friendly and helpful. Once seated the waitress took over 10 minutes to come by and only said "you ready". She could have cared less that we were eating in the restaurant, eventhough the service around us appeared much quicker. The saganaki was among the worst I have ever tasted, hard and rubbery, which we sent back. The skordalia, stuffed peppers and shrimp were fantastic, although the skordalia was served to us without anything to dip in it. It took another ten minutes to get some bread, and they don't have pita. The house wine was tasteless as well. All in all, if you are not Greek you will receive poor service, as everyone seated after us was being served before our order was even taken. I have been to plenty of Greek restaurants and this ranks among the worst. I will not return.
