CHEERS in Astoria.
I moved to Astoria from the East Village b/c I was looking for a neighborhood w/ a sense of community and I found one of its centers at McCann's! Most locals hang there and there is a lot of variety in the clientle, but everyone gets along well and hangs out; the waitstaff & bartenders know a staggering # of ppl by name, and if they don't know your name, they at least know what you drink. The bar is very clean--no stale beer smell--and the waitstaff is good. The sports element can be overwhelming if you're not in the mood (if you don't like football, stay away from there on Sundays) but if you're a fan of ANY sport, McCann's is the place to go with friends to watch. Specials every night of the week (the pitcher & wings deal ROCKS!!!!), and more to do than drink (pool, darts, paintball trips, fishing, Atlantic City, etc).
If you move to Astoria, especially if you don't already have friends in the area, go to McCann's--you'll make plenty of friends there!
Good food but crowded. I practically lived at this place my first year in Astoria. I don't know much of the new staff, and some of them are friendly, but there is one girl that worked behind the bar who was extremely rude. WHen I first began going, the staff is what brought me back each time. Normally the bartenders are great and they always know you by name. John, the manager, is ALWAYS there, he works all the time but always manages to be friendly and say hello. The food is great, much better than average bar food. The buffalo bites are addictive and the cajun chicken sandwich is great too. The portions are huge and they also have a great selection of beers. The ladies' night special is wonderful and they even accommodate those who want their girly martinis and such. This place is a great place to go on an off night. Stay away when there is a baseball game! On those nights and on the weekends it can become so frustratingly crowded and most people are pretty drunk. If you are a girl, DON'T go here by yourself!! There are lots of cool young people that hang out here but lately there have been some creepy guys drawn to this place just waiting for you to come sit at the bar next to them and have a few too many drinks!! Go with a few friends on an off night for dinner and drinks, and you'll enjoy yourself. They have great prices and specials with lots of buy backs, but know that there is NO dancing in mccanns!!
Cattlemart. The only thing Irish about this place is its name, ther are too many TVs,but it's very clean and food is not bad!
Way too crowded. Ehhh.... Wasn't really impressed. The setup of McCanns makes it feel way too tight and crowded. Other pubs in Astoria probably have more people but you can actually move around. It's real tough trying to get from one side of the bar to the other. I don't think I'd go back.
Best buffalo wings ever. I went over there last sunday and it was really good experience....cold very cold beer, great buffalo wings....good service....good crowd....excelent!!!!!!!
A popular Astoria Irish bar with a ravenous appetite for sports..
In Short
The stone-covered exterior practically speaks in an Irish brogue, and the theme continues inside with faux stone walls, a long wooden bar and Guinness, Smithwicks and Harp on tap (plus a few American brews). The bar's got personality: An Oscar Wilde quote decorates a mural of Stonehenge, and a firehouse facade honors Locals 117, 312 and 263. The cable TV package means patrons never miss a game--especially since each set is showing a different one. Food is standard pub fare, plus an all-day breakfast and some hearty entrees.
Fun Time. I went here. It was good. We only went for drinks but still got GREAT table service. It was a good crowd. I will definitely be back. It would be nice if one TV had something other than sports on it though. But I understand that's their "thing." The women's bathroom was very clean and neat. Go there!
Great. great service great food steaks cooked perfect great ckicken wings just great
Irish at it's best. I love McCann's. Great burgers, cool atmosphere and always packed. If you live in Astoria you have to check this out. It's possibly the best Irish bar in NYC - as far as I know.
