What Our Expert Scouts Say

January 06, 2013

Astoria's diners rule, but the king of late night Queens eating has to be Uncle George's, a full-fledged Greek restaurant at least as good as its better-known rivals, all of whom are closed when it is open and welcoming.

Not Good in The End. First ended up not holding the food down. Decided to give it a second chance I looked like the girl from the exorcist in the end. Might have been the tzatziki sauce or something. Thanks but no thanks for the third time !!!

Traditional Greek food at a very low price!. Anything you may be craving Greek is on the menu here.

Cooked like Mom makes it, everything I ordered here was awsome. Service was fast and courteous. Compared to other restaurants in the area prices are very reasonable.

Staff is very friendly. Overall great Experience, It has been a while since I stopped in but definetely going back soon.

Don't go there!!!!. I'm living in Astoria for 9 years and i tried this restaurant for dinner last week with a friend.First we didn't feel welcome in this restaurant because the staff didn't care of us.I ordered some roasted pork and the meat was very dried, disgusting and no taste. It looked like they served us the "familly meal"...i'm very serious!!!Even my dog will never eat it.It's the first time i'm writing a review on a restaurant in NY on 9 years, and i had some bad experience in the past, but was ok.This one is the WORST!!! And if i can say a last thing: poeple who let a very good appreciation about this restaurant are certainely friends or relative with the owner or the staff working in this place. This restaurant should close for ever!!!

Excellente. Right in the heart of an industrial and residential lively shopping area. I like the service. cheaper the most other greek places in the area. I like the musaka and the pestesia, tatste something like italian lasagna, just a bit creamier. Italian/greek food taste similar, b/c both countries are located nearby each other accross the river fork. Hot coffees are good. They make my meals exactly the way I want it. It could be a bit crowded especially at nightfall, but no long lines.

You never walk out hungry, nautious, or sick here.......

The beers are amazing.

Worst Greek restaurant in NYC!. I have ordered roasted lamb and gyro platter. First, potato that came with lamb was sour and uncooked, and lamb looked like it was cooked in water, not roasted; greasy, smelly, sour, and hard. I took bait and spew out. And gyro was even bigger disappointment. Most of the Greek restaurants in Astoria serve real gyro, with real chunks of meat, however Uncle George serve prefabricated tasteless gyros loaves, made of ground meat pressed into a cylinder and cooked. I couldn’t touch it even I was very hungry. I was there in 2003 and they were fine, but I am not going to step in that restaurant anymore.

Best Authentic Greek Food. Uncle George's has the best authentic greek food around. Being Greek i know what greek food is supposed to taste like and this is it. I drive from Jersey at least once a month to eat at uncle Georges with my friends and family. I highly recommend the melitsanosalata, the Fried Calamarakia, Athirinia, Octapodaki, and salad for appitizers. For main courses highly recommended is the Arni (Lamb) sto forno, and there oven potatoes (they melt in your mouth).

disappointment. I've heard plenty about this place and today finally tried it. I won't dwell on service for too long, because no one really expects this sort of mom-and-pop place to have outstanding service, however, here the staff is on the brink of ignoring you. One appetizer came, the other followed 10 minutes later and 2 minutes before main courses have made it out. My request for tomato sauce or ketchup was never satisfied. Pork souvlaki was unbelievably dry, fries were over-fried dust, baby bbq lamb was fatty, bony and thoroughly unappetizing. Fried calamari were quite bad. The only thing I liked was the saganaki but it doesn't take a genius to deep fry a piece of cheese albeit a good piece.

Incredible turn of events.. I heard management brought a new chef so my wife and I decided to give it a shot despite it's bad reviews and reputation. Not sure what it was like before but the experience was phenomenal. My personal opinion: the most important part of a restaurant are the seating and the food. Both were exceptional. Prompt service, quick and responsive. The food was out of this world. Combined with a bottle of wine there's no way anyone would be disappointed. Looks like the new chef did the trick. I'm planning on bringing potential clients to this restaurant for my business too.
