In Short
The menu is half-Polish, half-English, which is good because visitors may not recognize kotlet z kurczaka (chicken cutlet) on their first visit. The endearingly kitschy, low-lit interior--faux brick walls, plastic-topped tables and streamers dangling from the ceiling--is augmented by homey smells drifting from the kitchen. Reasons why this is the most hoppin' spot on the block? Entrees like beef goulash, viener schnitzel and Polish kielbasa come with a vegetable and mashed potatoes, there's a nice selection of pierogies and blintzes, and nothing on the menu tops $6.50.

Having read the NY Times review, we looked forward to eating at Lomzynianka. The food was indeed really delicious and the interior was charming. *However*: the service was inattentive (we had to ask for more water *three times* over a period of at least ten minutes before finally receiving it [and it's not like our server ever bothered to notice that we had almost no water left]). Plus; when I added up the bill, I discovered that we'd been way overcharged for the borscht. I brought it to the attention of our server and he brusquely informed me that I'd ordered cold borscht. Indeed I had - but he never told me there was an extra charge, *nor* was it mentioned on the menu. In fact; when I pointed to the borscht and asked if it was cold or hot, he said "you can have it either way". He wouldn't budge initially, but finally he gave us a whopping $1 off (we were still overcharged by much more). Too bad for him, because we decreased his tip accordingly....

This homely little restaurant almost looks like a Halloween party gone wrong. Despite (or because of) the silly interior, the moose head and the fake flowers you're already being pushed towards thoughts of "neighborhood restaurant" or "Eastern European cafe." While, yes places I've been to in Bucaresti (older ones) have some WEIRD and RANDOM interiors which are the closest comparison I have to this place, there's too little smoke in Lomzynianka to make that comparison. And oh my, that place must have been SMOKEY before the ban. Ok, onto the food. I've not yet ordered something on this menu which I didn't like. Stick to hearty and almost home style dishes. I personally recommend the boiled beef with horseradish sauce, the ham hocks, the stuffed cabbage (for a light day), the pyzy (for a starving day), all of the soups, the excellent fresh pierogies, THE BLINTZES(!!!), etc. I basically recommend everything on the menu except for the cutlets and the non-Polish dishes. Then again, the Hungarian goulash is great here... The prices are CHINA TOWN LOW and absolutely irresistible. I go here once a week and I've thoroughly enjoyed every visit. The servers are either a younger Polish woman or an older man and both are prompt and friendly. The language barrier has not yet been a problem. This is one of my favorite restaurants in New York and it's well worth a trip to Greenpoint, a wonderful world which is home to the only train which doesn't go to Manhattan, the G. I travel around an hour and a half by trains if I go here straight from school and I still think it's completely worth it. The car ride is a more merciful 30 minutes from Bensonhurst. The Church of St Anthony nearby is one of the most beautiful Catholic churches I've seen in the U.S.!
