Editorial Review for Nathan's Famous – by Whitney Friedlander
In Short
In 1916, Nathan Handwerker, a young Polish immigrant, borrowed $300 from friends Jimmy Durante and Eddie Cantor to open a hot dog stand on booming Coney Island. Using his fiacee's recipe, he sold these soon-to-be-famous dogs for only a nickel. Eventually, these restaurants spread to Yonkers and more points west, now showing up in malls, airports and neighborhoods throughout the U.S. The menu has expanded, too, and includes hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and French fries.

I've been going to Nathan's for over 50 years. The natural casing dogs are the absolute best for taste and quality. The fries (you can't get them anywhere else) are the best tasting. At the Coney Island location, you can get a BBQ sandwich which comes with onions and relish (pardon me if I'm drooling) This place is an experience. Follow the crowd which has been there forever...you will not be disatisfied!!!
Pros: always fresh and clean
Cons: some long waits

Nathan's dogs are good but like any business that gets too large, quality starts to suffer. Having a Nathan's dog while strolling Coney Island will always be a quintessential New York experience but the truth is the best hot dogs are in Manhattan at either Gray's or Papaya King. You get much more for your buck at Gray's or Papaya King as well. Nathan's now also serves fish and chips, fried chicken and even burgers. The Coney Island location is essentially 3 restaurants in one now. Service is of a fast food quality but tolerable. If you want kraut or onions, you have to request it upon ordering.
Pros: Good Hot Dogs; Can't beat the location
Cons: Doing more than hot dogs has hurt the hot dogs
