What Our Expert Scouts Say

December 22, 2012

This otherwise unexceptional-looking Queens pub has one special claim on the attention of New Yorkers: its famously oversized hamburger. In fact, the burger isn't actually that great; like many similar Irish bar bombs, its size doesn't correspond to flavor or, really, anything. But to eat it, when hungry, in the kind of working-class Queens bar that Archie Bunker would have gone to -- that's a special treat, maybe even one worth the subway ride.

Absolutely Love Donovan's!!!. My parents have been taking me here since I was a child and it just gets better each time. The people are so friendly, the atmosphere is great, and the food is unbelievable. This is the best hamburger you will find in the city or anywhere else! It is definitely worth the trip to Woodside. If that doesn't convince you, the prices certainly will. They're so affordable, you don't even need to bring a credit card.

A Queens mainstay serves up perfect pints and the king of NYC burgers.. The Scene
Mom and Dad are in town, and they want to see where their pride and joy goes to knock back brewskies. It doesn't seem prudent to haul 'em to your usual watering hole, where everybody knows your name from chanting it as you slurped up tequila shots from the bartender's navel. Instead, hop the 7 to Woodside and suck down happy-hour suds at family-friendly Donovan's. The sprawling pub has been pulling pints for Irish locals since your mum was a wee lass.

The Draw
The parents will take you for a regular when the waitress pats your shoulder and calls you "luv." If not, maybe Dad will be too busy arguing over the televised ballgame with the graying expats to notice. Don't be surprised if you find yourself sneaking back. Donovan's also serves up the most sublime burgers in the city.

Surprisingly Very Good!. After a few weeks of persuading, I finally agreed to try out Donovans for dinner on a Saturday night. The outside of the bar, and even the bar area as you walk through the door, does not do the place justice! Once you get past the bar you see the restaurant is comprised of 3-4 smaller rooms, that are quite tastefully decorated like someone's dining room. The menu is very inexpensive, but the food was out of this world! I had swordfish and my boyfriend had shellsteak, and both were perfectly cooked, as were the side dishes. I would happily have paid twice the price for what we got. The service was also great - we asked for some whipped cream to go with dessert and the waitress actually hand-whipped some fresh cream rather than telling us they had run out of the squirty cream!

ONE OF THE BEST. I remember when I was little my family and I use to go to Donovan's at least once a week. The food was always great and I absolutely reccommend the hamburger, the shepherd's pie and most of all, the french onion soup! It is all to die for and you will have a great time. The train may bother some but it comes with the territory! Enjoy and try to sit by the fireplace....you won't regret this restaurant!

The Absolute Best. My mother grew up in Queens, and her parents took her and her sisters to Donovan's on a regular basis. Then when the girls were old enough, they went on their own. THen my parents took me there when I was young. Now, I travel about 40 miles to eat there, and everyone who has the hamburger with the famous onions LOVES IT!

No Weight Watchers Here. Whatever they make, they make it hearty and plenty of it. You're not going to extend your lifespan eating here (probably just your waistline), but damn, it's good. It's not '10' good, but you're not left wanting more once you've finished. The waitstaff is hit or miss. The bar and main dining room are well-worn, but if you can sit in the dining rooms past the kitchen area, it's very nice.
