Editorial Review for Sripraphai Thai Restaurant – by Jean Tang
The Scene
This is the kind of Thai food some consider unattainable in Manhattan. The atmosphere is squeaky clean and no-nonsense: Tables for two can be pushed together to accommodate groups--if there's room. There's a strict no-reservations policy, but even when the weekend line goes out the door, the vibe stays happy and laid-back.
The Food
A good way to judge a Thai spot is by its green curry: The all-Thai staff here fashions it spicy and smooth, filled to bursting with meat and thin-sliced bamboo shoots. Shrimp papaya salad could set you on fire, but not everything is spicy. Chicken-coconut soup strikes a good balance between sour and the raw, gingery taste of galangal. A heat-bearing rice noodle dish is chock-full of basil and chili-flecked ground pork succulent enough to be called creamy. Even the coconut rice--simultaneously moist and fluffy--transcends boundaries.

They serve us red snapper in chili and basil leaves, which I did not order. So I told the waiter, that we didn't order the snapper. Then she told us that we were wrong and we had ordered the snapper. When we told her (again) that we had not ordered it, so she said, with an attitude in her voice, "So u don't want this right? The kitchen is closed, so you still won't get what you want if I take this back." So we figured fine, since we were hungry. The green curry came a few minutes later, we realized that there was no eggplant in it at all--it was just curry with fishpaste and basil leaves, bamboo shoots, and ginger. Again, NOT what we had ordered. Where was the eggplant? Then I saw our waitress taking orders at another table. Bad service is one thing. LYING TO YOUR CUSTOMERS is another. She must not have thought we would see her taking orders. I will never come back to this place. There are plenty of better Thai restaurants that have better food and QUALITY service.
Pros: place looks nice
Cons: Bad Service, too expensive for food that not that great

We trekked out to Queens from the city on a Saturday night based on a recommendation from a friend. There was a wait, but our party of 6 was promptly seated when a table became available. They have a pretty good number system in place. We ordered family-style and got to try quite a few dishes. Each dish was flavorful and authentic (according to my friends who just got back from Thailand). The wine was not over-priced and the coconut ice cream was probably the best I've had.
Pros: Authentic Thai food
Cons: Cash only
