Once in a while my wife and I go here because of their film selection. We have found that the best way to go here without complete aggrevation is to buy tix on fandango and pick them up in the lobby. Of course today we didn't do that and we waited on the line and when we finally, after 10 minutes, reached the window the moron ticket clerk unapologetically informed us that our movie is sold out. Couldn't she have made an announcement so we didn't waste our time? Or how about the morons counting money next to her put a sign up that says sold out!?! If you go here you will see there is no manager because the place isn't friendly or competent.
Pros: Have movies that are too find elsewhere, the popcorn
Cons: overcrowded, moronic, clueless ticket clerks

Dirty and badly maintained. The theater was very dark and the bare metal on the seat ripped my pants from waist to mid thigh and left a nasty scratch. Manager's response was that she couldn't do anything. After begging for help to cover myself, she finally agreed to my plea for a stapler. She didn't send anyone to check the seat to prevent someone else's injury.

this is what makes new york what it is. an old theater that shows independent flicks and has the subway running under your feet. what more could you ask for?!

I went out see a film hear recently and bought tix at the kiosk inside. I was charged twice for 2 tickets and after calling four different numbers and being on the phone an hour I still haven't gotten my money back. This only adds insult to injury since this is the worst theater in the city.

Many of its theaters are way too small. Why paying the full price for so much discomfort?? If you want your movie experience to be comfortable, I cannot recommend the Angelika.
Pros: great movie selection, nice crowd
Cons: too small, concession stand

Was this really built in 1989? Didn't they hear about stadium seating? Did they ever try to watch a movie in this theatre? Awful. Who cares about the cafe, THIS IS A MOVIE THEATER! Go get your overpriced coffee somewhere else. The sound was the worst I ever heard. Bad quality.(the subway sound is constantly part of the dialogs.) The seating? Oh,please... Lucky me who didn't have anyone in front of me. People put their coats on the seats to avoid other patrons sitting next to them (specially in the front of them). If they at least charged less... but they have the courage to charge the same as any other decent theater.
Pros: movie selection
Cons: bad seating, bad sound, subway noise

I love this place. It does get extremly crowded from time to time. But this was the first place i saw an independent film and i will certainly continue coming here.

What is wrong with the management of the Angelika? Are they completely oblivious to what is happening around them? The place is going to implode. I bought tickets online to guarantee myself seats - unfortunately the machines where you get your tickets were out of order so I had to wait in a very long line to get them at the ticket-counter. The bathrooms are disgusting - and the doors don't lock. By far my greatest complaint is about the seating - I consider myself tall at 6'2 but I was still unable to see the bottom half of the screen when someone sat in front of me. From now on I'm going to see my films across town - the Angelika has ripped me off for the last time.
Pros: movie selection
Cons: rude employees, poor seating, dirty batrooms

Still shows films that fit the foreign/art/indie category, but more and more mainstream fare has been added over the past few years. The Sunshine theater down the block has now usurped the Angelika's position as Manhattan's premiere art house. There is very little reason to deal with the ridiculous lines, rude employees shouting into the P.A. system, postage stamp-sized screens, and general air of decline. This used to be a once or twice a week destination, but now I'd only see a movie here if it wasn't playing anywhere else in the city.
