User Reviews for Metropolitan Museum of Art Rooftop Cafe

3 Star Rating: Average

Like the reviewer before me, I am writing to let tourists and fellow New Yorkers that the Rooftop Cafe is most assuredly NOT a cafe, or a bar of any sorts. I read the descriptions on citysearch and was excited to check this place out, assuming it would be a swanky, artsy bar atop the Museum with interesting cocktails and interesting people. I take the elevator up, and immediately to my right is a sandwich cart. In disbelief, I poke my head around the rest of the roof, but to no avail. That cart is actually the cafe. Sure, the view is great, and it's worth a trip up there. But seriously, don't go up there for the "bar." You can buy an expensive beer (and, incongruously, a bag of chips as well), but why not enjoy the Museum sober and then go to a real Upper East Side bar?

I became a member of citysearch for the sole reason of informing you that this isn't a rooftop cafe. There are no tables; there are no chairs, but you can get a beer for $9. If you want a drink at the end of a day exploring the museum, you can go upstairs and check out the view for five seconds of "oh," or you can actually go to a nice cafe on the street or in the park (boathouse is beautiful and cheaper!) and (gasp) sit down. There are other rooftop spots in the city that give better views and better atmosphere than this cement roof with a few bushes along the perimeter, and other museums that provide better beverages, better scenery and actual gardens. Check out the Cloisters. I hope this helps someone, because I was too disappointed to let anyone else be.

The roof garden on the Met is like knowing someone with the best apartment in town. The great view of the park and the fancy schmancy buildings along Fifth Ave and Central Park West are sooo worth the trip. The sculpture up there looks as if it melted in this summer's heat, but I think it's supposed to look that way. I even saw that famous red tail hawk eating a pigeon! He could have washed it down with a cocktail from the bar up there, if he had the money. I'd say it's one of the nicest places to be in the city.

Pros: Great view, Romantic, And culture!

Cons: none

OK, it's on the periphery, but nonetheless the skyline takes center stage at this lovely rooftop haven. A spectacular view from the center of it all -- really breathtaking in its scope and diversity. Oh, and there's art and wine and stuff, too.
