Good place for quiet conversation or to drink with a group of friends you actually want to hear

by mnbecker at Citysearch

Charming building with a good atmosphere - you can sit at the bar and meet new people or at a table with your friends. Friendly patrons and staff, good drinks.

  • Pros: Great place to go with friends or a date that you want to be able to hear
  • Cons: Drink specials could use some work - lots of competition around

Best Burger in NYC

by steptothewu at Citysearch

This is a cool little local Irish bar. More importantly though, it has the best burger in NYC (chopped onions and all).

  • Pros: Awesome Burgers, Chill, Awesome Burgers

Best Irish Pub in the City...

A place where interesting people meet, to exchange ideas and spend a good time in a inviting, and relaxed place with great service, and an amazing barstaff :)

OK, with a bit of time.

by Drink_Club at Citysearch

An Irish style bar in faux downscale East Village fashion hell. Packed inside, there was a table or two outside. It's a place for NYU jocks who are intimidated by the noserings and sleeve tattoos in the other local bars. One waitress manages all the tables. She didn't seem to be having an easy time of it. I ordered their version of Chicken Pot Pie. It arrived sometime the same day with a single napkin. Another Drink Clubbers used it to blow his nose.I was left with none... or an unpleasant choice. I requested a few more. A clean plate, two beers and a toilet visit later (the next day, actually), the napkins arrived. The beer was good, and the waitress-- what we saw of her-- was friendly. The outside garden is pleasant. Just make sure you have lots of time. --Drink Club is a roving group of Manhattan drinkers

  • Pros: outdoor garden, good beer choice
  • Cons: slightly expensive, SLOOOOW service

Quiet Irish bar for conversation and a tasty bite.

by Karen Hudes at Citysearch

The Scene
For years this peaceful watering hole has been a trusty spot for ducking out from the bustle of St. Marks Place. With a no-standing-room bar (the waitstaff needs to pass through) and two small rooms of wood dining tables, everyone in the house always has a seat. Dinner is the busiest hour, with lighter trickles of guests late nights and afternoons; in summer, the crowd expands to fill the back patio.

The Draw
The kitchen whips up a tasty fish fry, with tender cod in a crunchy beer-batter coating, and just slightly underdone chips. The Dymphna's pie is less successful--more of a loose chicken stew on bread than a comforting, crust-topped dish--and the Bailey's Cheesecake lacks body and liqueur. Still, the Irish breakfast triumphs, packing a hearty plateful of eggs, crisp potatoes, beans, mushrooms and four kinds of meat, including crackly rashers and flavorful black and white pudding.

What a find

by egaliardo at Citysearch

I threw a small birthday party for a friend here. The atmosphere is so great - lowkey, casual. The service was amazing. People in our party trickled in and ordered food as they came. The waitress kept up with our ongoing requests, and was so efficient and pleasant, and appreciative. She really made our night. And the food - beyond your typical bar fare - was delicious! We had such a great night! I've been here for casual drinks before, but was delighted that they were so capable and willing to handle a crowd! This place rocks.

  • Pros: great food, friendly service, neighborhood feel

Good Food & Atmosphere, Terrible Service

by fleshmop79 at Citysearch

I love St. Dymphna's. Its close, convenient, welcoming and the food is always well done. The problem is that whoever runs the place seems determined to hire hot Russian model chicks to bartend. Nothing against hot Russians, or hot chicks in general, but a basic command of English is a usual prerequisite for bartending here in America. Surely there are some hot English-speaking women looking for bartending work?

But aside from that, the food is great. Especially the chicken pie.

  • Pros: Food, Beer, Atmosphere
  • Cons: Service, Tiny Chairs

Irish people are better than ninjas!

by twilightdivide at Citysearch

St. Dymphnas is the best place to go when you're feeling down. Peter (bartender extraordinaire) is great, and the drinks are a great value. All the guys I take there fall in love with at least one of the waitresses. All the gals I take there find at least one cute bloke to chat with. The food is amazing!

  • Pros: baconbluecheeseburger, Peter (bartender), great waitresses

Delicious, cozy brunch spot

by justinhartung_citysearch at Citysearch

Never been for dinner, but the brunch here is superb. The Irish breakfast (or it's veggie cousin) is the way to go. A heaping plate full of fresh, traditional Irish fare. Veggie sausage is acttally quite good. Great bread and jam, too.
