Overview
Lincoln Center Plaza is dominated by the block-long Metropolitan Opera House on the west side, Avery Fisher Hall (home of the New York Philharmonic) to the north and the New York State Theater (home of the New York City Opera and New York City Ballet) to the south. Other Lincoln Center structures include the Juilliard School, the Vivian Beaumont Theater, Alice Tully Hall (a classical music venue) and the New York Public Library (Performing Arts branch).
Facts
The plaza with its meeting-place fountain was designed by Philip Johnson, as was the New York State Theater. Other outdoor art on the premises includes Calder's "Le Guichet" in front of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Henry Moore's "Reclining Figure" in the reflecting pool in front of the Vivian Beaumont and Marc Chagall's three-story-high paintings, which soar above the grand staircase of the Metropolitan Opera House.
