Great little dive with a huge character appeal

by aqua2150

I recently was a Dive Bar to kill time before meeting some friends and to check out some Sunday football. This is really my kind of place...something off the beat'n path. It's a tiny joint with a large bar, a pool table like think with stools and a few booths around the edge. The menu was definity bar food, but man did it all sound amazing....seafood, pulled pork, BBQ chicken, salads and amazing breakfast items. I nibbled on some chicken fingers and I must say they were the best I have ever had. Washed them down with a few bud lights and saw the Jet's get spanked, I couldn't ask for a better afternoon. Defs worth making the trip up town for a nice escape from the bars you see in midtown and below.

  • Pros: Friendly staff, amazing menu
  • Cons: Way up in the 90's

Pretty awful

by STJN

Fish and chips consisted of batter with some grey gunk inside, with two baked potatoes and some past-the-point-of sour tartar sauce; appetizers arrived after the main course and while a touch more palatable were swimming in grease. Beer was watered down and off.

Service was polite but incompetent.

If you're going to eat here, stick to the chips and salsa; if you?re going to have a drink stick to something in a bottle as they don't know how to keep their draft beer.

A packet of Tums might be a good option for dessert.

  • Pros: Not too much
  • Cons: Heartburn, bad beer, worse food

Feel at home

by alexastar

I've been to Dive several times and will keep coming back. It's a friendly atmosphere, , a touch more elegant than a "dive" and inexpensive. Perfect for meeting friends. The bartenders are really great!

Best Local Hangout

by georgemoral

I feel really comfortable when I'm there; I can be there by myself or with my friends. The sports on the TV is great and the food is not your typical bar food. I always have had a great experience there and will continue to go in the future. I wondered why it was called the Dive Bar and the answer is that the theme is Scuba Diving. Duh! I should have known that one. It was so obvious with the decor.

  • Pros: Good food, good tap beer selections-you actually have a memorable experience
  • Cons: bathrooms need some work

NOT A DIVE BAR!!!

by zadoro

For anyone who has ever been to a real dive bar... THIS IS NOT IT!! If you want a real dive, go to Rudy's or Yogi's or 1 of the 100 other real dives in the city. This place is more like an independently owned Applebee's. Can't be a dive bar if families go there for dinner on a friday night. Come on.

  • Pros: Like a fancy Applebee's
  • Cons: NOT A DIVE BAR

Excellent beer suggestion, decent food

by aronschor

If you are interested in trying new beers, you definately should visit the Dive bar. From my personal tastes, the waiter suggested Blanche De Bruxelles, which I thought was excellent and I have enjoyed other Belgium whites since then. Prices and portions were reasonable. The food was good as well. It was a Friday night and busy, but it wasn't too crowded where I didn't enjoy myself.

  • Pros: Beer selection, service
  • Cons: A wide variety of foods to match with the variety of beers would be nice

Great variety in scotch

by ambrosialdelight

If you like your scotch and like to sip it in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere, this is the place for you. They also have the largest selection of single malts I've ever seen in a "regular" bar, they even have some 30 years. They have a long list on the chalkboard of all the scotch and port too but I don't know a thing about port. The chalkboard is very useful because with that kind of variety it could take more than a few minutes to decide, this way you can take your time and make a decision before you approach the bartender. What's even more useful in making this important decision is that they list the prices too (unless they are in the process of re-pricing the item) . This is where I go if I want to have a scotch and especially if I want to try something new.

  • Pros: Great variety and convenient listing of scotch, relaxed "neighborhood" atmosphere

A grime-free Upper West Side bar for neighbor residents and Columbia students.

by Contributor

The Scene
A curved aquarium with multi-colored dwellers-of-the-deep greets incoming patrons at this pub that is decidedly less divey than its name suggests. There's no dusty film on the wooden tables and no grimy bartenders serving up your pint. Mirrors line the painted red walls of this narrow tavern, making the place appear larger than the space it actually occupies. And the bar is less than roomy--if you can't get a table, you'll have to go elsewhere, as standing around is not an option.

The Draw
The crowd comes to knock back a few, betting on billiards at the single pool table toward the back. Bar eats include hamburgers, BLTs and tasty 8-ounce pizza burgers. Multiple televisions show an array of sports, but only those seated at the bar are watching--the rest are off bonding with friends.
