Real people getting real drunk for real reasons. Scrape up a stool and don't be stand-offish. Breathe deep, smell the...humanity, and don't think. Drink!

  • Pros: atmosphere, humans being
  • Cons: broken atm outside

The first time I went here it was the last stop of our night and we were definitely drunk. I had no idea what to expect but one of my friends has been going for years so we went. It's small and dirty with graffiti over every square inch of space. I personally had a great time and have been back a few times since. This place is NOT for everyone so I don't recommend it for that but if you're the type of person that would enjoy something like this than check it out. Definitely one of the last places of it's kind left.

  • Pros: Dank and dirty!

Plaintive neon beer signs are the only clues that the broken-glass bricks and spray-painted murals aren't housing a sordid den of illicit activities. Inside, trash art by the hard-drinking regulars hangs above the long scarred bar; the jukebox blares thrash. Inside you'll find all manner of artists manque--"freelance" writers, painters without portfolios, musicians long between bands--drink with alkies, junkies and the co-dependent women who love them.

If so, then this is it! If you are interested in an adventure, then come here. If you don't want the regulars demanding your attention through wacky stunts you can't possibly ignore, go somewhere else.

Also, the bartenders are so beyond the insanity of the regulars that they won't speak to you beyond what you've ordered. After my night there, I can see why.

  • Pros: Insane regulars, Cheap, Adventurous
  • Cons: , Insane regulars

if you just want a drink and sit in a place that has THAT feel this is the one for you, good for sitting on a stool and staring at your glass.

  • Pros: inexpensive, no questions
  • Cons: bathroom

this is a real dive bar. it's small, dark, dirty, and full of punk rockers and middle-aged alcoholics (think alcoholics with no job, as opposed to alcoholics who don't like their jobs). it's the kind of place where you really don't want to use the bathrooms. if you want a pure dive, this is it. if you're looking for a "dive" that will be hot next year, this is not your place.

Gentrification of The Lower East Side? Not at Mars Bar. This place IS PUNK ROCK. Not so friendly eccentric regulars and dive atmosphere defines what once was The Bowery. Fair priced drinks, an unusual jukebox and a pin ball machine that will eat your money is what one should expect when they walk through the door. P.S. - Beware of the bathrooms!!!!

  • Pros: Atmosphere, Fun, Unique Experience
  • Cons: Filthy Bathrooms, Too Small
