It WAS great...but...

by Nativeater

Tapas Lounge WAS a wonderful, place, with tasty if overpriced food and wine, in a Mission-style atmosphere where it looked like Zorro could swoop in at any momento--been there maybe 80 times in the five years I lived down the street in that 'hood. BUT--it was closed last time I looked!

First time but not the last

by nafsika

If you like tapas with a very romantic atmosphere, comfortable seats and sangria then this is the place for you. I went there for the first time and I was impressed by the excellent service and individual attention I was given as it was my first time in this restaurant. both my date and me would go back without any reservations.

  • Pros: Ambience, Tapas, Sangria, Service
  • Cons: I have been there only once

Great Tapas If You Order Right

by qtgurljny

The Tapas Lounge is convenient for me so I go when I have a craving for some tapas. It's not the greatest restaurant overall in the world but, if you order right, then you'll leave feeling very satisfied. I always, always , always order the Jamon on cheese bread drizzled with olive oil. (serrano ham on toasted machango cheese bread), the salad with cheese bread, the photo chips with spicy mayo (thinly sliced deep fried potato crisps), the garlic chicken and the seasoned tomatos (cold tomatos, seasoned). Sometimes the plates come out wrong, for instance the tomatos will come out soggy or the jamon won't be drizzled with olive oil but, I always send it back if the order doesn't come out as I remember and they always remedy the situation. It's great if you know exactly how the dishes should come out.

Overpriced, average quality food, waste of a nice venue

by richardm001uk

Portions were very small (yes, I know it's Tapas), and very average quality for the money.

Service was a bit sullen. Several dishes weren't available (which they didn't tell us until we tried to order them).

Wine was incredibly expensive - no bottles of red under $40. Cheapest glass of red wine was $14 (and a very small glass!).

Decor was nice, and could potentially be very romantic if the romance wasn't being ruined by the terrible value for money.

IMHO, this place looks like they're struggling to get the customers in and their bank manager suggested they raise their prices to keep their revenues up.

Avoid this place and go to The Divine Bar for a modern American twist on tapas (51st street bet. 2nd/3rd Aves).

  • Pros: Decor
  • Cons: Food portions, food prices, food quality given the prices, service, and did I mention the prices?

What a rip off!

by abs378

I passed this place all the time and thought it had such a great open and airy atmosphere, so I gave it a shot. The $30 pitcher of sangria had more ice and fruit in it than alcohol and the over-priced tapas was far from authentic. I'd only go there if you're interested in the view of 1st Ave.

  • Pros: Romatic atmosphere
  • Cons: Over priced bad food and drinks

Beautiful! Relaxing!! Great Ambience!!

by lorelei528

I had an excellent dinner and evening here! I went with a friend and we both ordered 3 Tapas. For those saying the servings are small...well, they're suppossed to be!! As far as pricing goes, I don't think it's expensive for NYC considering TAPAS are like the size of an appetizer, it's really not bad.

Gorgeous decor, comfortable to sit and drink wine and chat...went during the week and was seated right away. I had a glass of wine which was delicious but was perhaps a bit expensive (I think it was $10)...we were comfortably full afterwards, not stuffed, but again, TAPAS is suppossed to be light dining!

  • Pros: Ambience, tasty TAPAS
  • Cons: none

I love this place

by jmw2002

I've been going to Tapas Lounge for a few years, and I absolutely love it!!!! The sangria is incredible, and the tapas have always been consistently delicious. The decor is beautiful and romantic. And, unlike most loud, crowded tapas places, there's enough room to sit back and enjoy the environment (while still being able to hold a conversation).

  • Pros: Decor, Great Sangria & Food, Romantic

Food yuk, expensive yuk and smelly yuk

by ttteam

Similar to other reviews that Ive read, I wish that I wouldve visited your site prior to going to this restaurant. In any case it has urged me to join Citisearch and write my thoughts about this place that is truly disgraceful for what a tapas bar experience should beFirst of all the menu leaves a lot to be desired, it is very limited and not quite representative of a tapas restaurant. The raw materials were definitely on the cheap side, the chorizo was so blah and the paella was completely tasteless, clearly made from a frozen one. To make matters worse, the smell in my clothes from the poor ventilation has remained in my clothes for days. Service was ok, price was not. Bottom line: Avoid the joint!

  • Pros: Room Size, Decore
  • Cons: Food, Smell, Price

Only go for the decor

by lolli280

Having read several bad reviews, I was in no rush to go to Tapas Lounge but when a former NY friend was visiting from LA said we had to go, I went. Wow! What a waste of a night. The sangria was good but no where good enough to rationalize the $45 it cost. The tapas were good but the sizes were beyond small. Three shrimp for $10?!? No wonder why there is a two tapas minimum per person. As nice as the ambience was, this is one place I will not be going back to.

  • Pros: nice ambience
  • Cons: $45 sangria, miniscule portions

Worst experience ever!

by benaastra

I can't believe people go to this place. The size of the dishes is tiny, the drinks are all over priced, and they push bottled wine on you over and over again! Who wants wine with their finger food? Not me, and I will never go back there again! The place was jammed, and the boy who was apparently the manager seemed to not care about his over worked servers.

  • Cons: everything
