Consistently solid (very good food, good service)

by yippee at Citysearch

I work very close to Thalia, and it's just a no-brainer. This is one of the few places I know of that has been around for a while (at least for the 6 years I've been working in the area), and that hasn't gone downhill, or lost their enthusiasm to deliver good food and service at a reasonable price.

I have so many favorite dishes here: the duxelle ravioli with mushrooms, the crabcake sandwich, the braised short rib.

They also have a takeout place right around the corner, and the quality is just as good.

Whomever manages this place really has their act together.

The ambiance in the restaurant is also very nice. Perfectly soft lighting, and the tables are not too close together.

  • Pros: Consistency in level of service and quality
  • Cons: None

Really tasty food in a nice theatre district restaurant

by Leucadia at Citysearch

My husband and I ate here after a matinee show and had really excellent food. Our reservation was for 5:30 but we were able to be seated early (restaurant was still empty). The service was very prompt and polite. I had a tasty beet and goat cheese salad and really delicious, well-cooked skate with vegetables; my husband had a fresh mozzarella appetizer (good cheese, so-so tomatoes, but it is mid-October) and the most amazing gnocchi. So light and soft and fragile, they must have been half cheese. Delicious! A nice shared dessert and two glasses of wine for about $100. The menu might not be earthy-shatteringly innovative -- no foams or infusions or miso anything -- but really a good value for well-prepared food in the theatre district. Nice ambience too.

Fine Sunday Brunch

by RMSCT at Citysearch

My family and I ate there before a recent Sunday matinee. Given how expensive brunch has gotten, it is refreshing to find one with meals under $15 that include juice/mimosa. While there are better places at twice the cost, it was a refreshing, plesant way to start the day on Broadway. Interesting dishes included a fine crab meat and asparagus omelette, vanilla french toast and great banana and strawberry pancakes. Highly recommended for a reasonable brunch spot in midtown!

  • Pros: Resaonable brunch, some different menu items
  • Cons: Staff a bit young, but pleasant.

Good service and drinks

by wisebrain at Citysearch

I went here for Restaurant Week so I got a cheaper deal. The portions are pretty small, but that's what you expect for fine dining in NY. I enjoyed the drinks and the service was impeccable.

  • Pros: Very nice atmosphere and great location for Theater dining
  • Cons: Expensive

Good gourmet food, service was a bit off. Still recommend it.

by gbarry at Citysearch

My wife and I ate there pre-show and they had some glitches in the service but we would go back for another try. We ordered a raw sampler, three appetizers and a side dish. We told them to bring them in any order as soon as they were ready. With tiny tables, they brought out EVERYTHING at once. I sent back the raw to chill out until there was room and we were swamped with the rest of the stuff. This kind of thing in inexcusable and if the stuff didn't look so good, I would have left. The waiter needs to have better control over the staging of courses and the food delivery guys need to be better trained. Onto the good stuff! The mussels, mozzarella and the raw plate were really good. The menu looks very interesting and we will be back to taste some more.

  • Pros: Food, ambiance
  • Cons: service glitches

Spoiled Juice.. Mediocre Food... Horrible Management

by snugl13ear82 at Citysearch

I went to to Thalia for brunch, ordered an omelette with asparagus and crab meat. It was more like a flap of egg with cold crab meat, asparagus and tomato inside. This brunch entree comes with a choice of drink.. wine, fresh squeezed juice. I ordered a "fresh squeezed" grapefruit juice, when it came it tasted fermented. Disgustingly acidic. When i asked the waiter about this funny taste, he recognized it has gone bad, took my drink and quickly came back with a new one. When i asked him if it was fresh squeezed, it says it may have been fresh squeezed an hour ago. A juice does NOT ferment in 1 hour! When asked to speak to the manager, he admits the juices are squeezed last night and he simply said he doesn't know what went wrong, that the entire container of which the juice came from is okay. He even says the bartender tastes the juice in the morning! He implied that I don't know what i'm talking about. So he just said "I don't know".

This just disgusts me in how the management does not even acknowledge their wrong doing, and i had to suffer through a disgusting taste of spoiled juice.

I would not wish this experience upon anyone. I went to this restaurant based on nice reviews.I expected quality food, because its not a "cheap" place. But i don't know what is so nice about it other than decor.

Great Atmosphere, Mediocre Menu

by miss_k at Citysearch

All of the greatness of this place lies in its ambiance; great lighting, chic decor, classy yet unpretentious atmosphere. The service was also very attentive and the seating prompt.

However, you'd never come here for the food. Though the food itself was great, the menu selection is pretty mediocre and limited. Nothing on the menu really jumped out at me, which isn't a great thing when you're paying $20+ for an entree with no side.

So, come here for the great atmosphere, for a nice place to lounge and have good drinks, but don't come here for excellent food.

  • Pros: Fantastic ambiance, classy and chic atmosphere, good drinks, good service
  • Cons: Bad menu selection

Great seafood, Reasonable Prices

Great food. Everyone in our party of six enjoyed their meal. The prices were quite reasonable for NYC. The only negative was that the bathroom wasn't very clean

Good food, but super slow

by lizbazos at Citysearch

I had to go here for a lunch meeting and the food was good, but the service was pretty bad. They were acting like they were really busy, but in fact, the restaurant was nearly empty. Since we only saw our waiter about 2 times we had to ask the other wait staff when we needed something. He even took forever to take the check. So, the food is good, but the service is slow!

  • Pros: Good food
  • Cons: SUPER slow service
