Great Time
by Cara716
After living on the UES for about 3 years now I have become a fan of Mad River. Every time we stop in, there is always something going on. There were great specials and the music was just what we want to hear. Recently we just had dinner there and the food was awesome i def. recommend the burger with the waffle fries!
- Pros: Service, Prices
OK

went last night. great girls but horrible bouncer who thinks he works at a nightclub in nyc. overall good experience but relax at the door, its only a simple bar on upper east, nothing else
Hands down a blast and great value in NYC!!!

Ok I visit NYC only once a year for the NFL draft with friends and we always go to M-R! Established a great rapport with some people who work here and basically enjoyed the hell out of every night we have ever gone there! No rip offs, yet your right there in NYC with some great people for fun! I love this place and will always go back! Music, drink prices, location etc. by far one of my favorite places to go!
You like to dance, listen to good music, see girls, or just chill up front? Then you can do it all here, trust me! I'm a former jock and business man, "Thumbs up to Mad River"!
- Pros: Honestly I have not had a bad experience yet!
Nice Staff, music

one of my favorite places on the UES. great place to grab a good beer and listen to great music. the crowd is a good vibe. the bouncers could lighten up a little at the front door. good location to subway.
- Pros: tap beer, music

Ok so I went in last night to meet up with some of my girlfriends for a drink... ended up staying for pretty much the whole night! I am just happy I was able to get out of bed this morning. I had a great time, the DJ was really good kept the crowd going all night and it was only a Thursday! The bartenders were really nice and not stuck up like most other places. Thanks Kenny! If you havent been there yet you must check it out! This will definitely be a weekly deal for me. See you all there!
- Pros: Bartenders, Music, Drink Specials!
- Cons: I'll have to get back to you on this one!

Unless you're a regular at this place, I would never recommend anyone ever I care about to go to this bar. My friends and I went to this bar for the fist time last week. From the beginning, it seemed shady. First of all the bouncers at the door tried to make it seem like it was the place to be that night by trying to get us to give him money to get in (this place has no cover). He at first refused one of my guy friends in for no reason and made it apparent that he wanted money. When we eventually got in we went to the bar to get drinks...the bar was ok...drinks were alright, nothing worth talking about. By the end of the night a short guy with glasses started trouble with one of my friends because his girlfriend was dancing with my friend. His pride was obviously hurt and he told the bouncers a bs story about my friends starting trouble. Because this loser was a local and a regular the bouncers believed him and kicked my friends out. **Unless you want to see girls dancing barefoot on a nasty floor or have annoying pigs trying to talk on you the whole night. Take your money and party elsewhere.
Beware of berating bouncers
by glaxtitute
We went here as a group to meet another group of friends, who were already inside and drinking for hours already, on St. Patrick's Day. We expected it to be crowded given the fact it was St. Patrick's Day and this is your typical frat-boy type bar with young just-out-of-college age guys acting like drunk idiots so I'm not going to complain about the crowding (which was any bar on that day). I'm not even going to complain about the fact that I had to pay $6 for a lousy CAN of Bud Light. What I do feel the need to comment on is the over-zealous bouncer who worked the upstairs room/door and the manner in which he treats/acts/speaks towards the bars patrons. My roomate was patiently waiting on line for the ladies room (at least 15 minutes). She was still patient even when the bouncer allowed 2 girls who supposedly work there (but who were not working on this day) cut the line in front of her. She was still patiently waiting (and was the next person in line to use the bathroom) when the bouncer brought a 70 year old lady from the STREET up to use the bathroom and brings her to the front to cut the line. However, it was at this point the bouncer chose to berate my roomate for absolutely no reason and begins SCREAMING at her, calling her drunk (she had had TWO BEERS and was NOT drunk) and stupid and telling her she needs to shut up and stop acting out of control, etc. to the point where he had my roomate in tears and hysterical. Maybe he mis-took the other girls in line who were yelling and making a scene for my roomate who hadn't said a word. I don't know. But what I do know is that I will NEVER return to this bar again after witnessing this. I (nor any of my friends) have ever been treated/spoken to in such a manner as we are not usually "those girls" or "that group" who causes scenes by getting wasted. We have had good times at this bar in the past but this altercation has left us with such a bad taste in our mouth I can't even recommend this bar to others.
- Cons: Bouncer, line for the bathroom
Wings with free dessert
by badmoonrising
Went for wings on a Saturday afternoon. The wings were 10 cents which is a bargain for NYC bars. However the wings should have been called "winglets" due to their miniature size. After the wings an unexpected dessert presented itself on the bar. Desert being a C OCKROA CH. The occupant vertically crawled up the bar on my arm then ran around on the bar like ratts in west village taco bell. The bartender came over and called for backup. He disposed of the creature and she simply wiped off the bar and acted casual. No apology + no reduction in bill = NO RETURN TO THIS BAR.
- Pros: Beer
- Cons: Infestation issues
Good hang out spot..

While this is not the most exciting place to be, it is definitely a good place to have a few drinks and enjoy with friends. It sure gets packed. i went to see a live band play and sure had fun. Like I said, nothing exciting except just another bar uptown NY. Friendly staff and ok drinks.
