If 125th Street and vicinity are the Times Square of Harlem, the addition of this multiplex makes the comparison stick.

The Scene
The Harlem outpost of AMC and Magic Johnson's 8-year-old theater empire resides within the multi-million dollar retail/entertainment complex Harlem USA, a block-filler to rival the Virgin Megastore complexes downtown. Old Navy and Nine West have also colonized the place.
The Draw
While the nine-screen complex is definitely up to the standards of other AMC theaters--with standard amenities like decent screen sizes, stadium seating, and digital sound-- it's the neighborhood atmosphere that makes the place unique. The Magic Johnson is right around the corner from the Apollo Theater and a few skips away from the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. building, the epicenter of Harlem Week's parades, festivals and fashion shows every summer. Outside Harlem USA, sidewalk vendors hawk music, books, clothing and collectibles along the busy strip, while inside, the lovely mural on the lobby ceiling says it all: Black elders and children gazing up at a baby blue sky.
Holding it down in Harlem!

MJ Theater is one of Harlem's best kept secrets. It's neither too crowded that you'd change your mind and go to another theater nor too "ghetto" that you have to bring your own bug spray or an extra pair of shoes because your feet have stuck to the floor. The greatest asset is the food at the consession stand!! I bet it'll be around for a long time.
