What is the Mexican term for being taken advantage of? Los Pollitos II is a scam. For about ten years I have been going to Los Pollitos about once a month. It was close and used to be an endearing and cheap neighborhood place with no pretension. Now? Forget it. It has been getting progressively worse in recent years and I have been having quite a few miserable experiences – mostly service related. But after my most recent visit, last night will be the last time. Why is that? For a variety of reasons. The constant nagging to order something you don’t want “Waiter: Are you sure that you don’t want guacamole? Maybe I will bring it?” Arguing with you to order a larger serving of something you do not need or want. “No, we said a small pitcher of margaritas. We really don’t want a large pitcher (for the third time).” But this is the big reason: They charge a 20% gratuity (unannounced) added on a bill for PARTY OF TWO AFTER the TAXES. That is a roughly a 30% service charge on the original bill! They total the bill, add tax and then add twenty percent on top of that. How unethical. What are we, tourists in Times Square? We are a quiet couple from the neighborhood! So now we are tipping on the tax. So, we entered “already included” on the tip line on the card receipt and signed of on the total. IT GETS WORSE! They then added another 20% to the credit card!! They DOUBLED the bill with service charges!! For two people! What would they do for a party? What is with that? A 30% service charge! Years ago, one could go into Los Pollitos II and order a taco and they would treat you well. Now, if you are not ordering a huge amount of food, the treat you with a complete disregard. And if you do order substantially, they gouge you! So some advice: BEWARE! CHECK THE BILL BEFORE PAYING AT Los Pollitos II!! DO NOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARD!!
Pros: Tacos
Cons: They inflate the bill by adding "charges" after the tax. Doubled the bill with "charges" after recent visit. Untrustworthy and unethical.

Normally I don't mind these kinds of things but... We stopped by this place on a Sunday for drinks and food. We came in because a sign out front said "Happy Hour $4.75 Margaritas." We went in and asked if it was happy hour with $4.75 drinks, the waiter said yes of course. So we sat down and ordered drinks and an appetizer. The margaritas were good. The nachos were small but edible. We asked for chips and received a very small basket and about two ounces of salsa at a cost of $2.65 with no refills. We had planed on staying for dinner and ordering another round of drinks but luckily we decided to leave. We asked for the check and of course the drinks were not happy hour prices, $13 for two instead of $9.50. We asked the waiter to fix it and he took the check back. Another waiter came over and explained to us that they had taken the chips off and that they did not have happy hour and that the sign was merely to bring people into the restaurant. Normally I don't mind this type of thing and I will just pay the extra cost. However, we specifically asked before being seated about the drinks only to have them turn around and tell us that the sign was not correct and that it is out there only to bring in people. The waiter even went so far as to say "you know how it is, you understand right?" We could not believe that he was actually saying that it was obvious that the sign was a lie, we were dumb for relying on the sign and their statement, and that they were doing us a favor for giving us the terrible chips for free. We just paid the check and left so that we did not have to deal with them anymore. We will never go back.
Pros: Nice Location
Cons: Lying and Demeaning Waitstaff, Poor Food Euality

Because of varying tastes and experience with Mexican restaurants and food, reviews for Mexican places are notoriously diverse. Los Pollitos has decent food that leans toward "authentic." Assuming it's a good day at Los Pollitos and you're used to the "swamp muck" variety of Mexican food, which is the only type many Americans know, you'll probably really like it. If they are having a bad day and you're used to Bonita and the taco places in Sunset Park and Jackson Heights, you'll be disappointed. As I've implied, Los Pollitos has it's good and bad days, although the service is usually poor. I like the tacos, which are usually good and reasonably priced and I usually have them delivered (rarely a hitch with delivery) or pick up there, which can be a hassle because the staff is very poorly trained and shouldn't be in the customer service business. What's kept me from ordering lately is their health rating, which you can find online at nyc.gov. Bottom line: Don't expect too much in either food or service.

I also read a few good reviews of this place and wanted to try it. It was a HUGE disappointment. The food is just not good. Not to mention, one of our glasses of water had a dead fly floating in it. The salsa really does taste like it came out of a can, and the tortilla chips were stale. We both ordered the chicken - it had absolutely no flavor to it. I try to have a positive outlook, but I just can't muster up any enthusiasm for this place. How disappointing. I will not be visiting again. Ever. Please go somewhere else...

Had read a few good reviews of this place and was really looking forward to eating here. What a disappointment. My margarita was weak and tasteless. The tortilla chips tasted like cardboard and the salsa like it came out of a can. The unspectacular appetizers were actually brought after the main courses were already on the table. The seafood dish I had contained exactly one shrimp. The rest was comprised of leathery monkfish and calamari that seemed like it was fried, then fried again, then heated in a microwave. The heavy sopping oil taste actually turned my stomach. How this place got its reputation is beyond me. Horrible.

Watery drinks, bad food, OK service. When I learned this was a chain, I laughed in disbelief. I've been twice, maybe I'm ordering the wrong things, but I cannot for the life of me understand how they manage to stay in business!
Pros: uh... it's cheap? not even...
Cons: food, booze, service, ambience

Now I know food! And Mexican Food is a favorite of mine, hence I've dined in many restaurants in the NYC area. And I Must say that this place is one of my favorites. The Food is great (or at least the super tacos are) and the guacamole and chips are awesome! They serve one of the best tasting Caramel Flans that I've ever had. Service is Good, Not Great...But Friendly. Selection is Ok...And Decor is not aesthetically pleasing, but typical for a mexican spot.
Pros: Excellent Tacos/Guacamole/Flan
