Over(Zagat)rated or Flavor gentrification

by eveningside

Falling in line with Sylvia's and Amy Ruth's, the quality of Miss Maude's has declined since I lived there. Sure, the food is still good (good in this case meaning rich tasting and filling), but pales in comparison to the "new" crop of more authentic soul food BBQ spots like Billie's Black on 119th, Melba's on 114th, and MoBay Uptown on 125th. Hopefully, the latter can sustain overrating.

The food is overpriced compared to what I can get elsewhere and the sides are average (good, but average, cornbread nothing to write home to Grandma Earlie Jean about). It's practically indistinguishable from Amy Ruth's. Still...when you're hungry and on upper Lenox there are few places to go where you CAN get good food at this price, so this, of course, boosts its appeal.

  • Pros: Good food, for upper Lenox
  • Cons: Average 'soul' cuisine. Just stay home and cook it yourself.

Deserves More recognition

Being African American I eat soul food that's cooked from scratch often so I don't normally find anything so wonderful about soul food places. Miss Maude is now like a new Aunty to me. I am starting a cleanse tomorrow and wanted to taste wonderful food one last time. Tired of going to Amy Ruth(which can be great at times and then sometimes is too over rated) I decided to see what Maude was going to do for me. All I can say is if I knew the food was going to be this good I wouldn't have waited to get in the house.

My order was a pick up sonce I wanted to enjoy my last meal at home. It was surprisingly empty inside, the girl who took my order was extremely pleasant. I ordered the ribs with stuffing and yams. The stuffing tasted like it was right out of the turkey and came with gravy. This Southern girl is in heaven. Going past 125 was definitely worth it.

  • Pros: Clean, Friendly, Quick Service.
  • Cons: Location

Real southern food in New York

by coco42

All I can say is this is real southern food!! Just get there!! The one on 110 St. is really small and has that comfort of a southern home with the down home cooking to go with it!! The one on 135 Street is great to!! They get down and dirty and cook the food REAL SOUTHERN STYLE!! My family members who live in the Mississippi would always come & visit before I moved south. They always would say "Girl we need to go round the corna to that there resturant!!! Trust me they can cook and they know real southern food!! So get on over there and you will taste that real good home cooking!!!

  • Pros: polite southern hospitality!!

by quenamac

Restaurant had an old timey, down home appeal, nothing fancy. Good food at reasonable prices. Lots of food for your money. Husband ordered buffet and I ordered pork chops. we visited on Thursday July 27,2006

  • Pros: good food, prices and service
  • Cons: no air conditioning had a fan on--- i guess down south appeal

Soul food times two in the heart of Harlem.

by Contributor

The Scene
With its vintage Harlem photographs and campy strawberry curtains, this uptown fixture feels like a less touristy version of its sibling restaurant, Miss Mamie's. Church ladies sporting extravagant hats rub shoulders with bigwig locals, and community organizers regularly hold meetings over Southern-style meat loaf, candied yams and blackeyed peas, with nary a yuppie in sight.

The Food
The menu offers a full range of soul-food favorites. Happily, the food seems slightly tastier at this location: The catfish is crispier, the collard greens spicier and just glancing at the smothered chicken will give you a heart attack. The sampler menu inexpensively satiates the indecisive with a variety of specialties including shrimp, ribs and chicken.

Culinary Euphoria

by gkny99

Whenever in the mood for some down home soul food this (or its sister restaurant - Ms. Mamie's Spoonbread) is the place to go. The catfish, my favorite is light and fluffy. My boyfriend loves the smothered chicken. Both locations are small and not fancy, but its definitely worth the visit. Only con is the iced tea, which can make you a serious contender for diabetes. Also unless you're getting a salad, don't bother counting calories.

  • Pros: Excellent Food, Inexpensive, Vegetarian dishes
  • Cons: wait, restaurant size
