Incredibly disappointed

by outofthebloo

I came here a last week on a Saturday night. I had a reservation and was told it would be just a few minutes and the next table was mine. Unfortunately someone who appeared to know the owner (and who I overheard didn't have a reservation) was given my table. The hostess was lovely and apologized even though I knew it wasn't her fault. We were finally seated and our waiter was attentive and friendly. Our drinks came promptly and were delicious. Our table shared the crabcake and quesadilla, which was a bit rubbery. Our entrees were better. My filet was perfectly cooked. My husband's lemon sole was light and flakey. Our friends also seemed to enjoy their food. The low point of the evening came when the owner was walking around, and stopped at our table to see how things were. He had clearly been drinking, was slurring his words, and couldn't take the hint that we had no interest in talking to him. He finally stopped bothering us after 10 minutes of painful small talk. We had the chocolate souffle for dessert, and it was as good as everyone says.

Overall, the food and service were probably 3.5 stars, but I advise everyone not to go there. Don't give that man any of your hard earned money. He needs lessons in customer satisfaction.

Best Tenth Avenue restaurant featuring Reinvented American Classics.

by YvettePo

I loooove 44 & X. It has been my favorite restaurant ever since I moved to the city back in 2001. I live right up the block and my family, friends and I go as often as we can to catch up and enjoy a spectacular, always delicious meal together. I have never had a bad meal there! Never. My favorites are the crab fritter (YUM- I can taste it right now!), the burger with THE BEST fries ever, the wedge...so refreshing, the chopped salad and my all-time favorite comfort dish when I want to treat myself is the filet mignon always cooked to perfection. The short ribs are also delish and so delicate they just melt in your mouth. And don't even get me started on the desserts...the chocolate souffle is to-die-for. No joke. And I'm not even a fan of chocolate! Anytime I bring a new person, he/she is very happy with me. It's perfect for a first date too!

The last time I went for dinner, they had changed their menu slightly (but of course keeping all the best meals from the original menu) so I am super excited to try some more of their dishes. Definitely order a side of the fries or mac 'n cheese for the table, you will not be disappointed. And if it's brunch, go for the French toast for the table...it's a feast both for your eyes and stomach.

So if you are in the neighborhood or at the theater, make a reservation at 44 & X...I'll be the dark-haired girl with a big smile on her face and the filet on her plate. :o)

Oh, and the staff is always very helpful and super fun to look at! The owners have done a great job of picking the best dishes and servers to make any meal one to remember.

i HAD to go one last time before leaving next week.

by monicurria

I went to 44&X today because a friend and I were catching up before I leave the country for 6 months. i HAD to go one last time before leaving next week. I was telling my friend that I have never taken a bit of something at this restaurant that wasn't delicious. I absolutely adore the MAC and CHEESE! yummmm. The wedge salad is delicious. The filet mignon is always cooked to perfection and brunch there is simply fantastic! The wait staff is friendly, cute, attentive and I've never gone without something to drink--the service is right on!.

I've never been disappointed and can't wait to come back from my trip for another meal!

WHAT A TREAT ON TENTH

by nycintheno

While wandering in Hells Kitchen last week we stumbled upon this creamy, glowing restaurant.....we were enticed enough to try it. While my friends raved over the Mac and Cheese, as one of the best they have tried, I was enjoying a delicious Caesar Salad.....the mains were wonderful as well, we enjoyed the Talapia, and the crunch on the Fried Chicken was superb. We left this place so happy, we called for a reservation for the following week. We would highly recomend this place..........

44 & never again

by JLinthecity

Going in, I thought "This place looks good." The hostess was friendly and accommodating. Menu looked decent. The ambiance felt warm. Boy, was I wrong. The food was hit-or-miss: the monkfish was tough, the salad wasn't bad, the cheese in the mac-and-cheese was grainy. The decor was interesting, but didn't make up for the view of the gas station across the street. The killer of the night was the waiter who, while friendly and attentive at first, turned on us halfway through the meal. Plates were thrown onto the table, coffee and dessert were offered in a now-or-never manner, and the check was tackily dropped in front of us. A horrible experience.

Nightmare on tenth

by DerekNYC

Nightmare on Tenth! This was one of the worst experiences ever in NYC! Rudest staff on the planet, and way too expensive. If you are going to charge that much money, at least give me some service without the attitude. The view of the HESS station and gas smell really add to the evening. I can only hope that this place too goes out of business. A group of us went there and we were told by the staff that the AC does not work and has not worked in a long time. Don't you think someone should tell you this in the summer with a large group of people? Then when you ask for anyone's attention about the situation, they used foul language and treated us so poorly. I live in the neighborhood and would go eat out of a garbage can before I'd eat at this place again.

Maybe 10 years ago there weren't too many choices, but now you need to step up your service or someone else will take your customers.

One of their places in the neighborhood has already closed, I can only hope that this place will soon follow. Do not eat here! It's not worth the cost, and it certainlyl lacks in service. Let's help this place close down!

Starts strong, but fizzles out w/the entree

by jes92

It's been about a year since we've eaten at 44&X...we were longtime patrons of Tenth Avenue Lounge, the precursor of this restaurant, and always enjoyed a nice meal if we found ourselves on the west, west side. Sadly, there must be some major breakdowns in the kitchen and management given how they struggled with a fairly basic dish. We were walk-ins without reservations and seated right away. Service was pretty good w/a friendly young waitress (though I had to ask twice for my drink after having ordered it...still hadn't arrived when appetizers were served) and an attentive bus staff. I started with the lobster taco which I have to say was delicious...my friend had the chopped salad. He then had the turkey meatloaf which was fine...I had the crispy bass with mussel reduction sauce....everything on that plate was overcooked. Fish was like rubber, the sauce overwhelming...even the vegetables were overcooked. I hardly ate anything and when the waitress came to ask how everything was, I told her my honest opinion. She said she was sorry and walked away...no offer to get me something different, nothing...very odd considering how most restaurants will either try to bring you a different dish or do something nice when you end up with a bad meal. With so many other restaurants in the area, I think this was our last visit to 44&X.

One of the Worst dining experiences ever.

by stephensaba

44 & X is grossly over-rated. My wife and I went there for an early dinner before theater.

The chairs are cheap plastic. The service is slow, VERY SLOW. Our tall waiter seemed

more interested in sashaying around the restaurant trying to get his butt noticed than

actually waiting on our table. The food was mediocre and not fresh. The fennel salad

which my wife and i shared was a mound of mush. Fennel was rubbery and soaked

in dressing, not at all fresh and crispy. The lobster casserole which my wife had was

$30, and a conglomerate of bland flavors that tried to drown out the few pieces

of lobster. It was clearly prepared days earlier and frozen. It was like eating something

out of the freezer case at Gristede's. My steak was not tender and I asked for medium

well, but it was rare. No time to send it back since we were so pressed for time

due to the lack of good service. at Jersey Boys later, my wife had severe abdominal

pains and we had to leave after the first act. Bad Lobster Casserole? perhaps.

What an awful restaruant. will NEVER go back or recommend. I can only imagine

the good reviews on this site are from employees of the joint.

Good food and great service as long as you can stand the management

by uachrisb

Always a good time if you can avoid the socially awkward customarily drunk owner who welcomes you with a smile and then tries to give you the boot to make room for more guests. The food is great and people come back over and over but only for the friendly staff who make this place worth visiting. Know for a new spin on American Classics, the menu features such Americana hits as the quesadilla and filet mignon--both American standards.

It's a fun time but the stories are true. I've seen the rodents in the restaurant and there are more than one kind lurking. The biggest one of all owns the place.

  • Pros: Great staff
  • Cons: The owner
