Going in, I thought "This place looks good." The hostess was friendly and accommodating. Menu looked decent. The ambiance felt warm. Boy, was I wrong. The food was hit-or-miss: the monkfish was tough, the salad wasn't bad, the cheese in the mac-and-cheese was grainy. The decor was interesting, but didn't make up for the view of the gas station across the street. The killer of the night was the waiter who, while friendly and attentive at first, turned on us halfway through the meal. Plates were thrown onto the table, coffee and dessert were offered in a now-or-never manner, and the check was tackily dropped in front of us. A horrible experience.

Pros: ambiance was ok

Cons: service

Nightmare on Tenth! This was one of the worst experiences ever in NYC! Rudest staff on the planet, and way too expensive. If you are going to charge that much money, at least give me some service without the attitude. The view of the HESS station and gas smell really add to the evening. I can only hope that this place too goes out of business. A group of us went there and we were told by the staff that the AC does not work and has not worked in a long time. Don't you think someone should tell you this in the summer with a large group of people? Then when you ask for anyone's attention about the situation, they used foul language and treated us so poorly. I live in the neighborhood and would go eat out of a garbage can before I'd eat at this place again. Maybe 10 years ago there weren't too many choices, but now you need to step up your service or someone else will take your customers. One of their places in the neighborhood has already closed, I can only hope that this place will soon follow. Do not eat here! It's not worth the cost, and it certainlyl lacks in service. Let's help this place close down!

Pros: there aren't any

Cons: service service service and lack there of

It's been about a year since we've eaten at 44&X...we were longtime patrons of Tenth Avenue Lounge, the precursor of this restaurant, and always enjoyed a nice meal if we found ourselves on the west, west side. Sadly, there must be some major breakdowns in the kitchen and management given how they struggled with a fairly basic dish. We were walk-ins without reservations and seated right away. Service was pretty good w/a friendly young waitress (though I had to ask twice for my drink after having ordered it...still hadn't arrived when appetizers were served) and an attentive bus staff. I started with the lobster taco which I have to say was delicious...my friend had the chopped salad. He then had the turkey meatloaf which was fine...I had the crispy bass with mussel reduction sauce....everything on that plate was overcooked. Fish was like rubber, the sauce overwhelming...even the vegetables were overcooked. I hardly ate anything and when the waitress came to ask how everything was, I told her my honest opinion. She said she was sorry and walked away...no offer to get me something different, nothing...very odd considering how most restaurants will either try to bring you a different dish or do something nice when you end up with a bad meal. With so many other restaurants in the area, I think this was our last visit to 44&X.

Pros: attractive space

Cons: inconsistent food, indifferent to feedback/complaints

44 & X is grossly over-rated. My wife and I went there for an early dinner before theater. The chairs are cheap plastic. The service is slow, VERY SLOW. Our tall waiter seemed more interested in sashaying around the restaurant trying to get his butt noticed than actually waiting on our table. The food was mediocre and not fresh. The fennel salad which my wife and i shared was a mound of mush. Fennel was rubbery and soaked in dressing, not at all fresh and crispy. The lobster casserole which my wife had was $30, and a conglomerate of bland flavors that tried to drown out the few pieces of lobster. It was clearly prepared days earlier and frozen. It was like eating something out of the freezer case at Gristede's. My steak was not tender and I asked for medium well, but it was rare. No time to send it back since we were so pressed for time due to the lack of good service. at Jersey Boys later, my wife had severe abdominal pains and we had to leave after the first act. Bad Lobster Casserole? perhaps. What an awful restaruant. will NEVER go back or recommend. I can only imagine the good reviews on this site are from employees of the joint.

Pros: close to the theater district

Cons: food, service, uncomfortable chairs,

Always a good time if you can avoid the socially awkward customarily drunk owner who welcomes you with a smile and then tries to give you the boot to make room for more guests. The food is great and people come back over and over but only for the friendly staff who make this place worth visiting. Know for a new spin on American Classics, the menu features such Americana hits as the quesadilla and filet mignon--both American standards. It's a fun time but the stories are true. I've seen the rodents in the restaurant and there are more than one kind lurking. The biggest one of all owns the place.

Pros: Great staff

Cons: The owner

Cute, fun neighborhood restaurant with excellent service and food. Made pre-theatre reservations on a Thursday night. Was greeted and seated promptly with friendly service. Scallop appetizer was cooked to perfection, could have had this for main course it was so good! Table had the fabulous, unique meatloaf, to-die-for halibut and the chicken. Both people who had the chicken, said it was the best they ever had. Overall a wonderful dining experience. Oh and the dessert (chocolate mousse) was delicate and sumptous. The eye candy was a nice added bonus :)

Pros: Service, Quality of Food

Cons: Can't think of one!

Visited here with no expectations and was really blown away. Great service, diverse menu and the food was silly good. Short ribs bested my previous favorite at Dylan Prime, and the blue salad was perhaps the best I've had. $135 before tip got us 4 drinks, 2 appetizers, 2 main dishes, 1 side and 1 dessert. I will be back for sure.

Pros: Great food, excellent service, good layout

Cons: view

I've eaten here on a few occasions, and every time it seems to be for someone’s birthday - guess that's a good indicator as to the mood of the place; that is if you're going for the hip birthday thing. The food is a mixture of inventive upscale meets down home favorites, with a bit of southern flair – collard greens are served with many dishes I’ve had. Try the mac&cheese, but if you're only a party of 2, order the app, the main course is a lot of food. The meatloaf wrapped in prosciutto is awesome. And the friend chicken with waffles is artery clogging good. Did have a seafood special once which had a bit too much lime, but in the 4 occasions I’ve eaten there that was the only dish I had which disappointed slightly… They also have a good wine selection with a fair amount of wines offered by the glass… Deserts have been great as well. Had a chocolate tart last time I was there that was perfect. The waiters are very fab, Chelsea boyish, but not snobbish, who offer friendly and professional service. In the spring or summer evenings eat outside if tables are available.

Pros: Food, service, fun factor

My sister, the true NYC Diva, recommended this fab eatery...she always has the low-down...and she's good! Great wine by the glass list (get the Pinot Noir) as well as fun coctail inventions mix with this eclectic and immaculate gem of a hotspot! And now for the food... we shared a special salad with pears and cheeses. Perfection! However, it was later beat by the giant helping of THE BEST macaroni and cheese ever (sorry, mom)! We also ordered the lemon pepper chicken over divine mashed taters! OMG! We didn't stop there...had to dive into the delish creme brulee (served with a star sugar cookie). We left so content and high on the good food and wine that you better believe we'll be back! YUMMO!

Pros: Atmosphere, menu, drinks, service
