back in the day I used to get massages from mike and francesco, Id go back and forth because they were the best ever!!! Franc stopped working there a little while ago, mike forever ago-years, but, I know Mike's working around the corner at G Spa in the Hotel Gansevoort now, Im gonna head over there for a good massage from him...I hear they got a steam room and relaxation pools, Im all over that. and if anybody talks to francesco, let me know, I'd really like to set up an appointment with him too.
Thanx

Good for the Money and Location

I've been going to Nickel on and off for a few years for massages and I've always been satisfied with my experience -- the courteous people, the clean space and the overall service, moreover the rates are extremely resaonsable for NYC or otherwise. Try it, I thiink you'll like it.
I think that some of the other reviewers of this establishment had higher expectations and/or were in search of an entirely different level of service and environment. This is more of a modern day "beauty salon" and not necessarily a "day spa" - - remember, you get what you pay for. If you want all the bells and whistles try spending a few extra hundred dollars on the service you want and dropping a nice chunk of change in gratuities and you'll probably get exactly what you're looking for - - an expansive front lobby, over-the-top friendly and phony front desk people and technicians, million-dollar decor, etc. Just my opinion.
- Pros: skilled staff, clean space, prompt service
- Cons: no ambiance music
my husband loved them!

He has his spa day, I have mine, and i have to say that whatever those men are doing in there, they have it down. His skin seems to be better shape than mine these days. i wish I could go...just wanted to write and say thank you for the great work. He's a real looker, always has been, but now with amazing skin and black head free:P eew
- Pros: great facials and eyebrow waxing...
- Cons: he's addicted

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE BUSINESS
by nykenn
My first visit for a facial, given as a gift. Be careful with this place the staff is extremely disorganized, stressed, miserable and not sure what the process was for giving a facial. There was no heat in the building and when asked to speak to the management no one seemed to know how to reach them. They take a Laissez-faire approach. Don't waste your money or time, there are much better places.

Please he is very professional and you probably came on to him like the gay athlete. So stop your lying and admit that you are uncomfortable with your sexuality.
- Pros: great
- Cons: none
Not Perfect but Legitimate
by gqny
I went to Nickels on Oct. 13th for a 3.5 hr Spa day, Though the spa is getting tired looking, the spa services themselves were satisfactory. I had manicure, pedicure, facial and massage. As far as the massage goes, I had a 90 minute massage with Franco, the massage was 100% legitimate, albeit there was no music and the room was very cold. I have gone to Nickels in the past, this will probably be my last time. I was looking for a relaxing spa day and what I received was just Ok. For what they charge ok is not enough.
- Pros: Spa for men
- Cons: ambience, cold treatment rooms, very expensive
Franco's Excellent!!!
by yogaforall
I have had many massages from Franco at Nickel Spa and at many other Spas. I have also recommended him to others, who have loved him! I don't know who these people are, but I can assure you, that Franco is Excellent! One of the best massage therapist's I have ever encountered. And also one of the nicest! Always has a smile and always makes me laugh! A great Masseur and a great guy!
Very good intentions, could use more attention to client comfort

I've been to Nickel, off and on, since they opened a few years ago, and it seems to have gone through some ups and downs in that time. My most recent visit was July 07, and I generally had a very good experience. Rachel, one of the manicure/pedicure techs, is just outstanding. She's friendly, warm, and does excellent work. I also had an excellent facial with JP, and a very good Swedish massage with James. (Despite some earlier posts, I've NEVER experienced anything inappropriate during a massage at Nickel.) This most recent visit was the first time I'd had a haircut at Nickel, and I have to say, she did a great job. I don't have that much hair these days, but this is the first time I can recall in years when anyone complimented me on a haircut. (Note: There were 2 stylists the day I was there. The one who did my cut was excellent, but, unfortunately, is planning to reduce her schedule to part-time in order to return to school. The other stylist seemed more than a little CRAZY, and I wouldn't be anxious to let her near me, for any reason.)
I agree with others who say the "waiting area" in the back is depressing and cramped. The love seats don't appear to be comfortable for more than one person at a time, so I've found myself perched on a barstool against the wall more than once. And that can be particularly tricky when you're in a bathrobe, waiting for a massage appointment! Men, also, are idiots, and when one or several of them decide to conduct business on a cell phone or compare notes about the state of parties at the Pines, it's impossible to escape the inane conversation because the space is so small. (So much for relaxation, unfortunately.) I rather enjoy the retail area--they have a lot of great merchandise--but I think the management would do well to think about a renovation that would shrink the size of the outer lobby in favor of more space in back, along with some better furniture choices and creating space conducive to quiet and de-stressing.
- Pros: Rachel the nail tech, other professional staff
- Cons: Cramped, uncomfortable waiting area
